Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

I like the white plastic ones because I can see whats in them and can see the different layers as the oil settles. Besides they are free at the car wash a mile from where I live and I would have to travel 20 miles and buy the steel ones.

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

Depends on how you are dispensing from them......

I built a little stand, and lift them up and gravity dispense.

The metal ones are easy to roll, but i have found the plastic ones harder to deal with. They seem to dent real easy.

Neither are that bad though.......

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

For anything heated you need to use a sealed steel container, serious fires have happend with plastic. White plastic is nice for wash tanks.

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

When you guys say "heat + plastic is BAD", what level of heat are you speaking of? Are you talking more about Bio-D than WVO? I'm looking at maybe 100-120*F for easier filtering flow, but that isn't too much above summer ambient in alot of places. Is this "steel" temperature, or is steel the only way to go for even this much heat?

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

oh. the caution does apply to bd more as you are working with highly flammable methanol. Plastic barrels seem to handle high temps. Just be careful to control where the heating elements touch, they can burn through.

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

I believe that plastic may be better for storing finished biodiesel because they do not condense moisture inside as badly as steel. My drying tanks are steel due to water heater elements welded in. Whatever can be scrounged can usually be made to work.

Re: Steel or Plastic drums?

Another ? - I Woud a plastic drum moune on its side and straped down to a cradle fasted to the bed work as OK in in-bed fuel tank ? I would mount a coolant heated fuel pick-up in the bottom bung hole and a PVC pipe elobow filler neck in the top bung hole . ( will it take the heat
and what about sloshing in a bank without baffles ? )
