Switching between Biodiesel-20 and Diesel #2

Hi All,

I have a few questions...

1. If I switch and use the biodiesel (it's available in San Diego) then travel and can't get it on the road will switching between the two, occasionally, have any adverse effects on the engine or performance?

2. Besides changing the fuel filter, often, will there be any other issues?

3. Also, is it necessary or wise to use a cetane booster in the B-20?

Thanks,

Bud

Re: Switching between Biodiesel-20 and Diesel #2

B-20 is 20% pure biodiesel mixed with 80% regular diesel. You can mix and match as much pure Biodiesel with as much regular diesel as you want. No side effects.

The "plugged fuel filter" side effect should go away after a couple of filters. It all depends on how dirty your fuel system was before you started running biodiesel.

You should not need any additives when running biodiesel. Bio-D is a cetane booster on its own. Mixing it with regular diesel just makes the biodiesel a little cheaper to buy, and gives the bio-d a little better low temperature tolerance.

What are the symptoms of a plugged filter? Do you have to remove it and inspect it?

Re: Switching between Biodiesel-20 and Diesel #2

Engine will start to run badly. Make more noise, maybe some white smoke from the exhaust pipe, finally shutting down.

The plugged fuel filter will result in low fuel pressure to the injectors and the engine gets mad.

Open the fuel bowl and remove the filter and look at it. Will most likely be covered in goop of some kind.

It really depends on how nasty your fuel system was to begin with, and how much bio-d you run. The higher the concentration, the sooner you'll plug the filter until it cleans your system.

You should be changing your filter every 30k or less anywayz.

Re: Switching between Biodiesel-20 and Diesel #2

How long can I expect the fuel filter to start giving me problems if I start using B20?

Should I check it periodically or just replace it after the normal 15,000 again?

I just replaced the FF when I bought it earlier, this month.
