I'm not a biodiesel brewer but have given serious consideration to using WVO. Anyway, I saw THIS story on my local TV news tonight. Are any of you biodiesel brewers stuck paying road taxes? I wonder how long before the states will want to collect road tax on WVO being used as a fuel?
I really don't mind paying taxes. How else are they going to fund highway repairs?
They offer tax credits and other financial rewards for alternative energy use in residential stuff. Maybe the can cut us some slack on the alternative fuel source.

If they actually applied ROAD TAX to the ROADS, then we would all be driving on perfect roads. Perfect roads make for better fuel mileage, because the perfect road wouldnt have bottlenecks and rushhour traffic. We would get to work on time and with no headaches, and life would just over-all improve in general.
Of course, that makes sense, so the Govt will never do it.

Good point, and I pretty much agree. I just don't feel government needs to go this far. Bio-diesel accounts for a very small portion of fuel used in this country. They should offer an incentive (tax break) for using alternative fuels such as bio-diesel and SVO given the benefits they provide rather than discourage their use by taxing.

Look for the mods to shut this one downs as we are all revealing our political stripes, but I will add my .02. They can't encourage fee and independent thinking...too risky. To keep on topic...the tax thjing I think is a stae and local matter. The feds have already stated that woth biodiesel you can make up to 440 gallons per quarter tax free(At least I read that somewhere). The state tax man may come for his though. Don't know about WVO. As someone said, they have to fix the roads somehow, and I don't mind apying for it if I'm going to use it. However, I heard that an alternative way of taxing the roads was being discussed in some localities...a use tax, based on your type of vehicle and miles driven. That may be the wave of the future, what with all these new alt. fuels, hybrids and EVs soon to be about. Its quite possibly a fairer tax. A user fee is always preferred in my book.

In Colorado we pay a "use" tax with our early registration.
I asked the clerk one time when I was registering my PSD why it cost so much compared to my F150. Comment was that my PSD was a one ton and cuased more wear and tear to the roads. Also my PSD was worth more money than the F150. But on top of that I pay the same state tax at the pumps, this wouldn't be so bad if the roads weren't so crappy! But they really suck.
And you know if they do tax the WVO it is what 20 to 40 cents per gallon depending on state? If that is true then you are still spending less than 50 cents per gallon. Still seems like a good deal.

How will they know unless you tell them? Does the tax collector keep track of individuals harvesting WVO from restaurants? I think that I'd keep my use of WVO as a fuel kind of low profile, especially if tax issues might come into play. The worst thing one can do is to get on a public forum such as the local news and announce to the world what you're doing, at least if you want to avoid Big Brother interfering with you. Just my .02, but I've met VERY few politicians of any stripe that don't look for new sources of revenue.
