Tester batch pics. Pretty dark stuff..........

TDI club thread.....Pics at top

Got some oil that looked like tar. I didnt do a titration. I dont like titrations, and I dont have the stuff right now anyway.

500 ml oil, 3.5g lye, ~110 ml methanol.

Clear on second day, at 85* or so.

What do you all think?

I like a guy who says to hell with the instructions, lets WING IT!

Like the TDI guy said, trippy color! NOT the usual honey color we like to see, but if its clear and pourable...

Re: Tester batch pics. Pretty dark stuff..........

Ya. I tried to bump up the lye a tad, just to see how it would go.

Did 4.25 g/500 ml. The stuff turned to jelly instantly. I left it, and came back after 15 minutes, and it now looks the same as the batch with 3.5g/500 ml.

Im ready to do the 5g batch...

Re: Tester batch pics. Pretty dark stuff..........

Damn.

I began pouring WVO into my new tank, but forgot to CLOSE the valve at the bottom. Lost a good gallon out of there......

So then, I already have the methoxide all measuerd out for a 5g batch, and not Ive got 3.5 gallons to work with. I was forced to estimate. I apparently estimated too much, and ended up with jelly that has not turned back.....Grrr...Ill have to burn it now.....

Well, maybe next time.

Re: Tester batch pics. Pretty dark stuff..........

I wonder in a scenario like that, if you couldnt add more Methanol to dilute the methoxide, then only pour in what you need for the smaller batch. If you measured it out right, you could mix up the methoxide for TWO smaller batches instead of the one medium sized batch.

Given the volume of your batches, wouldnt it be in your best interest to get a distiller to reclaim your methanol? Even at say 50% recovery, thats still half as much methanol you need to buy.
