titration assistance

Need some advice. New to bio-diesel, built appleseed type reactor. I have gathered some oil from a few chinese and vietnamiese restaurants, 1 place tested at 10+ ml. of KOH mix others test around 1 to 1.5 ml. Am I testing wrong or is some oil just that bad? Is 1ml. on KOH solution to little or is the oil good? All places claim to use 100% soy oil. Any help would be appriciated.

Re: titration assistance

Titration at 1 KOH is excellant oil. 10+ is awful high for Chinese oil, but I suppose it is possible. That high oil is a good candidate for Acid / base processing. If you want bad oil go to a Wendy's. My local one tits regularly at over 22. I keep sampling it just to convince myself to eat elsewhere, or at least no fries with the burger.

Re: titration assistance

That is awesome oil. You've found a good source but I will give you one word of caution: always test each batch of oil you pickup from the restaurant before you make a batch.

10g/L is very high though, I would stay away from that one. Sounds like the oil was either sitting in the fryer too long or some other junk was in there.

I have seen instances where people will take it for granted that their oil will be a certain titration level and then find out it was a little to much higher than before.

Re: titration assistance

I have come across oil that titrates @ 21, and I have used it. I learned the acid esterfication process, and now use it for all batches. I use less KOH and Meth, and have greater yields. I don't titrate until the first stage acid process is complete. I can normally get the titration to be < 1 after acid stage.

THe 1ml oil you have is great, since you are new to this process, enjoy the 1ml oil, it will be easy to work with and your results will be easy to test as well.

The 10ml oil ... I would keep in storage and learn how to use the acid process, that way you will never be limited. You will be able to process any oil you find.

To learn more about acid esterfication check out this link

THer is a lot of information there, if you find you need some help PM me, as I will not process oil without using the acid process. The acid cost is @ $0.008 per gallon of oil, but I use 18% meth, not 22% as sugessested by most manuals. There is alos a saving in KOH, as my titrations are < 1.
