Today I spent a couple hours on the phone, and running around in my truck hitting up the Co-op / feed seed stores around town searching for Lye. Shortly into this deal it became apparent that I was being treated like I have Leprosy. Apparently they all think that anybody that needs Lye these days is a meth lab cook. WalMart has totally pulled the Red Devil drain cleaner products from their shelves, even the company making that product has now changed the recipe. What a damn shame, it appears that instead of spending $50 on a bag of Lye I will now have to pay well over $100 for the same stuff. The only folks making money on this deal will be UPS!
I found one guy at a Co-op that asked me if I was making Bio Diesel. The rest all think I am some drug dealer scum bag type. I sure hope my neighbors don't get the wrong idea about all of this...
KOH (potassium hydroxide) can be shipped to you or is easily obtainable at most chemical supply houses in 50 pound sacks.
Also, KOH is far more tolerant of screwups and wont form hard soap/sludge in your processor if you screw up.

Im trying my hand at this. Was unsure of how to use KOH so I found some lye. I wound up going to 10 different places. Your not kidding about the leprosy. I was actually accused 4 different times of being a meth cook. Wound up at a wholesale company. Told me I had to buy 200 dollars worth of stuff have a business license and a pickup truck. They recommended me to a mom and pops place that was very sympathetic.
I also tried buying a syringe for the titriation that was even more painful and I wound up getting them from a dog doctors office. I have seen junkies get needles but I cant get one to measure liquid. Guess I shoulda told em I was a junkie.
Being accused of being a meth cook might have had a little to do with the two quad shot mochas I had that day, lol. I was pretty jacked up. Just picture tweak from south park and youll understand. Ill just have to remember to lay off the caffiene when shopping for chemicals. Now when I walk out on the porch I make sure to wave to the feds.
Kanman--When are you going up to Rick's place? I have an extra 50 of KOH that you can have for $60. I drive about 50 miles to get it, but have no problems. I have to buy in 200 pound lots.

Kinda sad that a junkie can be given free needles at the clinic, when all we want is a syringe. I do get my syringes from Tractor Supply for my dog shots.
I had been avoiding Univar as I heard they were hard to buy from. But, I was running out of options after being on the phone most of the day. Called them up and they didnt give me a seconds worth of trouble about it. I found out they actually sell Methanol too. So... Ill be headed back there after I get pricing. Univar was $75 for a 50 lbs bag.
Yeah univar that was where I went. Nice people. Weirded me out that they had a security door though. Why? What are you paying for methanol per gallon? I dont recall specific but it was over 4 bucks a gallon. Alaska prices are higher he said. He said the way to do it is to get 6000 gallons at a time. Maybe I should talk all the biodiesel cooks into throwing in together.

Norman,
He WAS here last Saturday. We had a good day!
As for using KOH, I suppose its either or. Just gotta remember to use the different base and watch that purity!
I set him up with "The Software" so what ever he uses it will give him the correct recipe.
