Transformer Oil

Hello, I searched and couldn't find anything on this topic, so I hope I'm not repeating or wasting time here.

Does anybody have any information on burning/blending/straight transformer oil in their bio rigs? I have an opportunity to possibly acquire a large quantity of used (PCB-free) transformer oil...this is mineral oil that is used as dielectric inside commercial power transformers. I've heard that people do, but wanted some first hand "I've done it" knowledge. Anybody able to comment?

Thanks,
Minuteman

Re: Transformer Oil

I believe that several people have posted about it in the discussions about WMO/ATF and other waste type oils. So you might search thru those types of postings.

Re: Transformer Oil

I remember someone on this forum saying that they used some. Might be a post attached to a used oil thread.

Re: Transformer Oil

I wonder what its lubricating properties are like.

Burn some in a tablespoon and see how much particulate matter it leaves behind. If its dirty or there are additives, it might leave behind a large amount of ash or other stuff.

Check the viscosity.. is this a thick goey substance or thin like mineral spirits?

A teaspoon burn will give you lots of good information.

Re: Transformer Oil

Good idea about a test burn. As far as I know it is basically a mineral oil (or a derivative).

Lubrication wise, I'd be plenty happy to add lubricant if need be, or blend by ratio with grease (the ultra and pure lubricant!).

Not sure it's worth the risk yet, but looking for anybody's experience. I just hesitate a bit to put in the tank, but no guts no glory right? I'll be patient for some more research.

Re: Transformer Oil

Most oil in transformers is now mineral oil I have ran 50gal of it straight in my truck with no problems. It didn't even have a bio diesel smell like the corn soy or sunflower oil i have tried.
