Trash Pumps

I have made my second pickup with my trash pump now.
The first one I put the sucker all the way to the bottom and got 20 gal H2O and 10 gal of oil in an emulsion (From the pump?), What a mess!! 30 gal of foul smelling glop.
My second pickup I was more careful before I took the oil, got about 15-20 gal of oil.....no water, but when I started to drain the oil at home to put in my settling barrel it came out looking like the glop, but not nearly as soupy. Is this just aerated oil from the pump impeller?
You other guys that collect this way, does this happen to your oil too?

Will it settle back out fairly quickly?

Re: Trash Pumps

I havent had this happen to me. Sounds like your still pulling water from the bottom. There's a chance your pump is pulling too much and making too much suction and pulling the water off of the bottom along with the oil. When i get oil, i just let my pump idle and keep the hose closer to the top so that doesnt happen.

Re: Trash Pumps

I have a 2 stroke water pump, I just started using it about 2 weeks ago. The first time I used it in a known source it was about 45 degrees the oil didn't look like it would be something that I'd want to take, when I pumped it into my collection barrel; it looked like a white emulsion; when I heated it up in my settling tank it turned nice and dark.

I say try heating it up then go from there.

Re: Trash Pumps

i have found that you need to keep the suction close to the top, and follow the oil down. i messed up once and started at or to near the bottom. on the second can i set up near the top and it came out good. i poured the first can back in and keep on going it all worked out good. the bottoms of each can did have some glop in it after it set for a few weeks. oil was still good on top.

Re: Trash Pumps

There wasn't any water in the barrel I pumped out of today. Different place. There was a lot of thick sludge in the bottom, but no water. I did keep my hose near the top of the oil and followed the level down. The gallon I drained out of the bottom of my collection drum looks like it is starting to turn back into oil, but the light is going up like air not down like water. I hope. My pump is 6.5 hp, but it's cold and the oil is thick. I'm afraid the pump will stall at low rpm, but I could try running it at 1/2 throttle instead of wide open. When it starts to pump you can hear the engine speed drop till the governor opens it back up.

Thanks for your experiences guys

Re: Trash Pumps

weird. Mine is a 5.5 hp TP. I just start it and let her purr along at idle once the suction starts. It is nice and quiet and pumps rather quickly. Who would of ever thought there was an art to pumping off oil??

Re: Trash Pumps

I usually see cloudy oil going into my tanks, only to have it clear as the air mixed in by the pump bubbles out.

Keep the hoses high.

Re: Trash Pumps

That's what I'm seeing now too, but it's taking some heat to do it. It's cold enough now that the oil is a bit like honey. It's warmer in the garage, but the air bubbles coming to the top are making a foamy head.
I'll try a lower setting on the throttle and see if that helps.

Re: Trash Pumps

I use the same pump and I have my own tanks. I just pump it to the bottom and no matter whats in it it will settle out. When it rain it has water in it and its clears .

You could use THIS pump - NO impeller and the least agitation!

Re: Trash Pumps

$500 + for a pump?????? I use a donated hot water heater. (FREE) Hook up an air compressor (intake side) pull down to a -21 vacumme, and it fills itself. No noise. No mess. No cost other than a couple of connectors, 2 valves and some plastic pipe. When I get home I hook the compressor back up, push air in and the oil out.
Did I say "$500 for a pump?????"
