Using Old WVO

I am fairly new to this subject and am wanting to learn more about making biodiesel. I have a large amount of used hydrogenated canola oil that was used to fry garlic and onions. Some of the oil is many years old. Would there be more problems in processing old oil? Also would the odour of the garlic/onion still be present after mixing with fuel? Thank-you for any input.

Re: Using Old WVO

If the oil was kept in sealed containers, I would normally say no. But since I cant see what the situation is it's too difficult for me to tell.

I would run the titration test, there are many websites that can show you how to do this. I would recommend talking to girl_mark on here. She really knows what she's doing and has done so for a while.

Re: Using Old WVO

yeah, what he said- if it's been in sealed containers it's probablyfine for years (I've used some that was stored for two or more years). It also depends on hwo much water was in it originally- if there was water then bacteria might have invaded it (it'll smell really bad like a faint baby diaper smell) in this case and broken it down a bit.

Garlic and onion smell will probably mostly not be detectable in the exhaust- I've had some smelly basil-flavored salad oil biodiesel and you can't really smell it in the exhaust.

Titration- always sounds on paper more difficult than it is in real life. It takes about 30 seconds:
the Australian version:

another writeup which sounds complicated but isn't:

The illustrations that are supposed to go with it when I geta round to adding them:
