Joat- I have to agree with your analysis so far. Just as lye is a catalyst that allows methonal to displace the FFA's in making biodiesel, actually changing the chemical makeup of the oil. Lye may have a completely different effect without methonal, and esepcially when cooked, possibly creating the black oxide. I am firing up the stove now and breaking out the notebook. Hopefully this evening I will have some results to share.
Jason, any luck with the experiments yet? I suspect the better the oil source, the less likely it will be to become corrosive. If you can't duplicate it, PM me an address and I'll send you some of the oil I used. I intend to try to duplicate my previous test soon, with the same as well as new oil. Think I have some of Heidi's barely used corn oil left too to try.
