Perhaps making bio-diesel, the going to waste vegetable oil. This should be fun. Thanks for the forum, Jason. I'll be picking some of your brains soon, when I get some time.
Is there a wayto buy bulk clean vegetable oil cheaply? What is the best oil to get?
Hey Bundo
You can buy veg. oil at costco or smart and final. I am not sure of the price, though. IMO, the best way to do this is to find a restaurant that changes their oil. Theyll give it away. Asian places are supposed to be the best, but any oil works.
From what Ive heard, the best oil to get is canola.
Good luck with it Bundo, how do you plan to do it all? I got a 15g coned bottom tank, and I built a stand.
Let us know how it goes.....
Canola oil would be good. I'd be wary of anything that might contain residual sugars (corn oil) that could coke up the injector tips. They wouldn't make it through the process, but if you're buying new oil, why risk it?
Isn't the idea behind this to get free fryer oil to save money? How much is Lye and how much is used? A manufacturer I deal with buys this by the ton.
What is the ratio of methanol? I have a solvent manufacturer here in ATL that should be able to get that cheap too if he doesn't already have it. This is really too easy, so I wonder what the catch is going to be for me.
I've been looking at this site. Are there better ones?
20% methanol by volume--and 4 grams of pure lye per liter of volume

bundo--if you can find who is getting the waste oil from the restuarants--the ones that bulk recycle it--you can NORMALLY buy if from them-----BBUUUUUTTTTTTTTT-around this area--when they clean it--they want 1.35 a gallon---and at that price--it aint worth turning to bio--but would be alright to add to tank at least 50% mix----

I'll check that out. $1.35 is about a dollar less than we pay for diesel here

Actually, its by MASS to be really technical, but luckily most oils are pretty close to the right weight by volume.

Also remember that if the oil has been overused, you might need a bit more lye and m ethanol. That is what the titrations are for. A timely step, but worth it.

For the Methanol you could try here: http://www.hiperfuels.com They will ship it to your house. What about caustic soad, it is liquid lye. You can get if from any place that sell chemicals for water treatment. It come in 2 concentrations 25% and 50%. Beware that the 50% concentration freezes at about 45degrees F. If any of you are thinking of using this, it does come in 5 gallon containers. Keith

According to an article I have seen here the "foolproof" method eliminates the need for titrations and produces a better quality fuel with less glycerine byproduct etc.
