What about installing a pre-pump at the Veggie tank.
First off, I am proud to say that I have started installing my Greasel kit. It took me a while to figure the concept out (I was given NO DIRECTIONS), but now that I understand the stock system, the greasel system, and how they are to work together, it is really simple.
I have read of some concerns regarding the longevity of the lift pump after the veggie conversion. I know of 2 veggie runners that had to replace theirs after 3000 veggie miles.
I'll agree that it is important to make sure your veggie oil is hot before you start pumping. But, what do you think about the idea of installing a pre-pump back at the tank? That way, the lift pump is barely working.
I asked the Greasel guy about it, and he said that it is not necessary and that the pump is not jeopardized by veggie oil. He claimed that he only heard of one PSD that had that problem and it was 2 years ago, and that if it were an epidemic, that he would be hearing about it. Plus, he said that he thinks it is overkill. Like carrying 2 spare tires, he said.
Not necessarily, I say. And I'd like to prepare for it, rather than wait till I have to be towed to who knows where.
I am concerned about what pump to use. The drive pressure of the pre-pump would have to be exactly the same as the lift pump, I believe. That way you are not stressing or retarding the lift pump.
Just a thought that could save us some headache.

Re: What about installing a pre-pump at the Veggie tank.
The more I think about it, the more I attribute my lp failure to the fact that a fuel line on the output side of the Raycor filter was leaking air into the fuel line.
I was told that air in the lp was NOT a good thing.
Oh well, the leak is fixed, the lp is replaced and me 1200 miles later. Only half the front tank and a fouth of the rear tank of diesel gone... What kind of milage is that???

BTW, if you have questions I would be glad to answer them. I even have a picture or two of how to install the bypass valve and the fuel switch valve.
Re: What about installing a pre-pump at the Veggie tank.
I was thinking the exact same thing concerning a pre-pump to get the potentially thicker veggie oil on it way. One good thing is that if you install a tank in the truck bed, you will have gravity on your side. Beyond that, I have a feeling temperature and filtering are the keys to just about everything with a WVO fuel system. Heat the grease enough and it should flow well.
For an under-bed tank, I'd put a pump to help it out. Its much easier to push a liquid than to pull it with vacuum.

pre-pump---get one to fit a 83-87 ford pickup that didnt have a lift pump--but had an in tank pump--puts out 4-6 psi--this is what i want to put in the tdi to push the wvo forward to the ip--and a lot of parts people--including ford--dont know about this--only used for three years--and they very seldom presented a problem--but there 50 clams!!!!!!

Re: What about installing a pre-pump at the Veggie tank.
A lot of guys with old 6.9s like mine bypass the lift pump period, and install a "Holly Red" electric pump. Not because they're running veggie...just because a lift pump that is 30yrs old is likely to fail at some point, and putting an electric pump in makes priming the system much easier anyway when you do things like change fuel filters, etc.

the pump that im speaking of--its a in tank pump--will need to bring two wires up thru the sending unit cap--but should be easy----

Re: What about installing a pre-pump at the Veggie tank.
I have run a Holly Red on my 87 6.9, it's 3 or 4 years old and has worked perfectly, when I start running WVO I'll be running dual electric pumps with a switch in the cab that will control both electric pumps.
