What is a good WVO collection pump?

Hi all,

I am in search of a good electric pump to transfer WVO from a 55 gal. drum to a water tank on a trailer and the tank to the processor. Most of the pumps that I have found state they are for clear water use only. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

If at all possible, look for a rotary gear pump. It will work regardless of the temperature unless it's REALLY cold.

Centrifugal pumps (like the Harbor Freight blue "clear water" pump) are not self priming. They can't handle thicker liquids nearly as well. A rotary gear pump can handle thick stuff.

I've tried the Northern Tools 12v transfer pump but found it inadequate for cold grease. That is a rotary vane type pump. Fine for warm oil but just unable to push cold grease.

Personally, I use an oil pump from a ford v-8. It is a positive displacement pump, meaning it is self priming. It came with the hex shaft to drive it which I chuck in a hand drill and use to turn it.

It took a bit of work, not much, but it's not ready to go. Took the intake tube off, and welded a 1/2"X3/4" reducer (pipe threads). The 1/2" side goes against the pump, the 3/4" threads have a 3/4" ID nipple on it to attach 3/4" ID tubing as the suction side.

The output has much the same welded to it so the discharge goes through a length of tubing also 3/4".

Works great.

Same experience here. It works fine for warm weather, but it really bogs down once things get colder. I've also found that a 5.5hp 2" trash pump will really move that stuff, but then again that's not electric like you're looking for.

im not sure about cold oil yet as i have just got one this summer. i imagine it would work better than an impeller type pump. i'll keep you guys updated but so far this has been the best oil collection pump investment i have made.

Check out Redline pumps on the internet. They are expensive but they are the very best and have all the accessories you need.

Isn't that only good for about 3.5 gallons per minute? Northern Tool has some listed.. They look interesting otherwise. How much air does it consume?

for clear water use only may work
see if it has a black rubber seal on the pump and on the internal joints and such(where pipes join there may be orings)
and if they are very flexible black rubber youll mostlikely be fine to be sure call the company and ask if they use viton orings or if they dont see what type and pmme ill be able to tell u if its wvo/diesel/wmo compatible or not

Do they only work with a SEALED barrel? Or can it work with an open barrel as well?

Thanks

yes that is the only downside. they will only work with a sealed barrel. most of the barrels i've dealt with are sealed.
