thinking of making some bio with wvo i noticed people washing and draining glycerin, the dse way does not call for this? does the glycerin come from the addition of methanol?

Re: where does the glycerin come from?

The methanol when mixed with lye forms Sodium (or Potassium)Methoxide.

This compound causes the glycerin in the WVO to be precipitated out of solution, letting it settle at the bottom of the processor.

It is pretty much agreed upon not only here but on several other biodiesel forums that DSE is a mixed solution of snake oil and other hydrocarbon detritus. Some very very toxic chemicals such as xylol are used in DSE's formula.

Re: where does the glycerin come from?

Bio-Diesel is technically called "Fatty Acid Methel Ester".

Veggie oil is made up of a Glyceride Molecule with three Fatty Acid Chains attached.

By using an Alcohol and a catalyst, we strip the Glyceride from the three fatty acid chains. The glyceride falls to the bottom, and the fatty acids become the bio-diesel.

This is where the glycerine comes from.

Re: where does the glycerin come from?

I really don't think they are removing the glycerin at all. When looking at all the additives that they are using, I would say that it's thinning the vegetable oil to the point where there are no immediate modifications needed to pump the fuel into the engine.

There have been many posts of fuel pumps either becoming very noise after using DSE to outright failures of the fuel pumps.

Re: where does the glycerin come from?

so instead of removing the glycerin they just thin it then. I know they add kerocene and regular unleaded.

Re: where does the glycerin come from?

Do a search on "oil can harry" or "OCH". His method of involves using ethanol and KOH to "suspend" everything in the WVO. Nothing gets cleaned out but is thinned to the point of being usable in diesels. It sounds like a very viable method.....however that 10K engine in my truck makes me pretty wary of these other "methods." The stuff they are creating is NOT biod.

Actually, its not Junk at all! If you refine it, its used in cosmetics and soap and is worth alot of money!

You will need to evaporate all of the alcohol out of it, and neatralize the LYE with an acid (vinegar works well) until you get a pH of about 7-ish.

It also can be used in a compost pile if you can keep it mixed with other stuff and not a pool of glop.

Burn it in a waste oil burner.
