Since I'm living in a neighborhood and planning to brew in my garage should I notify someone, like fire dept, police ect to keep me from being jolted out of bed in the middle of the night under suspension of making meth or some other drug? National Fire code does come into play due to the methanol. I think it was like, 10 gallons max based on the flamability rating.

I remember reading somewhere before getting started about notifying your local fire department and making hazardous waste signs and having a plan and all that stuff. I figured I wasn't going to open that can of worms.

Someone here mentioned hazardous waste issues. What hazardous waste? Remember, there's a difference between a hazardous material (methanol, caustic) and hazardous waste. Its not a waste until you are ready to throw it out as unusable for its intended purpose. Our waste stream is NON-hazardous glycerin.
In most cases, hazardous chemicals in what are considered 'industrial quantities' means letting local officials know what you have on hand.
In most states (maybe all) we have a Tier Two Community Right to Know law that states we must disclose a list of the hazardous materials, quantities and where they are stored. All chemicals have reporting thresholds. I doubt seriously we are going to have enough KOH or NaOH to worry about. The methanol may be a different issue. The more hazardous the chemical, the less it takes to trigger reporting requirements. Makes sense though.
These are typically commercial issues. Hazardous chemical storage in a residential setting is a different can of worms. Its probably not even an issue.
Check with some local racers regarding storage of methanol in their garage. The gasoline for your lawn mower is more flammable than our methanol. And your kitchen already has some caustic of varying types.
To me, the issue is safety to the emergency responders. The firemen need to know if there is a hazardous chemical behind door number one, two or three. This is especially true if it is reactive with water.... like our caustic.
I think talking to your local racers who use Methanol would be your best bet.

when the fire department shows up because your garage is on fire, tell them then. there realy isnt enough to make a huge problem. the cleaning supplys under your sink make for a worse fire then most would think.

Man!!! oops!! i told the building inspector/fire inspector, and the other fireman/fire inspector, the fire chief, and the chief of police (F250 owner), even invited them over, (none came) the fire guys always come over when i burn yard waste to see whats on fire (lots of smoke) I love small town USA!!!! ok i also work for this small town so even the mayor knows, but i wanted them to know, so IF something would happen they would not be surprised, but i still say as long as you stay safe first they only need to know when they need to know!
