Why not run unwashed bio?

[ QUOTE ]
I would NEVER run unwashed Biodiesel in an % in anything I own.
Rick H...

[/ QUOTE ]

I did not want to highjack the other thread that Rick's (Omaha) above quote appearred in, so I started another. I wash and dry mine, but I know there are a lot of new people seeking information on bio and I think that this should be explained. I also know there have been replies on the forum from people who just brew and burn.

Your turn

Norman

Re: Why not run unwashed bio?

Well Norman you know the answer but since you posted for all to read and learn...
Where does all that Mentanol go?
Where does all the excess Lye go?
Where does the water that may have been in the WVO go?
Through the injection system if you do not wash it!
And heaven forbid you did not let all the glycerol settle out.
Washing is a must. Pain in the butt yes, but a must to make quality fuel.
You mentioned others that are not washing and just burning, but guess a difference of opinions is what makes the world go round.

Re: Why not run unwashed bio?

I also wash BUT Not sure of such a fast answer.......:

Where does all that Mentanol go? Evaporates when you dry the biod
Where does all the excess Lye go? To the bottom with the glyc
Where does the water that may have been in the WVO go? Evaporates when you dry.
Through the injection system if you do not wash it! NOT!
And heaven forbid you did not let all the glycerol settle out. When then let it settle & dry it.

There are a LOT of people running without washing...and have put tons of miles on. This isn't the only forum with info...if you want to run without washing do some searches and make up your own mind.

David

Re: Why not run unwashed bio?

I might not wash my biodiesel either if I had an old military truck or an old Mercedes that could run on basically anything.... but with a $30,000 truck I think I can go through the extra effort to not screw up my ride to work.

Re: Why not run unwashed bio?

I would never burn unwashed biodiesel in my truck.

Others can do whatever they want, but it doesn't make it right for me to try.

Re: Why not run unwashed bio?

I don't wash. I know to each is own. I tried and it took over 2 weeks to dry out and I have no running water or drainage in my spare garage. Truck runs great. I settle for a few days to a week and 5m filter into my tank.
