Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

Not an electrical genious at all!

I take the black top off and stick the cut end of a extension cord into the case. The white ' ground wire ' ??? goes to the far back corner where there is a single screw that fastens it down correct?

Did that..

and then im left with 2 wires a black & a light green (mint colored)
I have tried wiring them down to each screw and then doing it backwards and still when I plug her in I get nothing no noise no pumping! I did prime the pump and manually turn the fan blade 10 rotations.

I did also test the plug to make sure its getting juice and she sure is! OUCH j/k

Is it possible that I have a dud?

Re: Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

Lee,

I don't own one of these pumps, but here's the short course on wiring:

First, you didn't say if it's 110 or 220v. I assume it's 110v.

There are three wires to worry about. The black one is the hot one, the one that can shock you. The white one carries the current back to the fuse box after the current from the black one goes thru the motor. You cannot get shocked by the white one if it's wired correctly. Always wire black to black, white to white. The green one is tied to the metal case of the motor and to the green or bare wire coming from the house wiring. House wiring should have a black, a white and a bare wire. If it's 220, that's a different course.

Re: Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

do you still have the directions? they tell you which of the two to go to. on the Harbor Freight version, the terminals are marked something like u1z1 and u2w2 , which should get you there regardless of whether the white or the black go to either terminal.

Re: Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

and yes, like they said, you've got the wrong wire going to the ground. Put your green wire to the ground (the screw that's off on the side there and obviously connected to the case of the pump) and put the white and black to the terminals that are alingned 'long-ways' in the pump case (ie there are three terminals whose alignment forms an L sort of shape, and you want to wire to the two that are parallel to the length of the pump)

Re: Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

Thanks for your help guys & girls....I think you helped me out a billion on this one. I always thought that white was ground and had that connected to the grounding post. Thanks again!

Re: Wiring Northern Tool clear water pump

here's some photos of how it's done (caution: big files, I think- Ill be changing this web page in the future)
:
note there are several pages of this photo gallery. (I remove the black plastic housing first to make it easier to reach the ground screw without dropping it in the motor... that's what all the bs on Page 1 of the gallery is about.)

http://localb100.com/clearwater%20pump%20wiring

and this photo specifically shows the wiring : fat black and fat white wires were from my cord, the fat green one is the ground, and the other thinner ones were part of the pump to begin with (ignore how they're colored, that'll tell you nothing in this case, about what to connect to them)
