LunaTech,
Question for ya, I see your perma seperator setup, where did you get the fitting at? part number, brand ect, how can I get one. Also you mention that the lowes house water filter didn't work unless you use a reinforced one, where do I find that as well, is there a specific one I should be looking for that says it is reinforced? Thanks for the help
so, haz tanker ,someone looking for used moter oil should not expect to be able to get it for free ,from a commercial business like jiffy lube ? i dont know any one personally who works for that type of place . so i was wondering if they give it away as a in order to get rid of it or ,are paid for it .

If you look at the pictures on the first page of the thread, you will find a link to summit racing for the perma cool filter (2 micron) I am using and a picture of the 5 micron filter element I got from lowes. All the filters at lowes are in the same area. It's just a house water filter. Use the "rope wound" filter as it has the plastic piece in the ID to reinforce it but there is nothing on the package to state it is reinforced. Just take a close look at the pictures on the first page (click them to see a larger version) and you will see what I am talking about. Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of my filter setup. The one on the right (1st in line) is a 5 micron whole house water filter from Lowes and the one on the left is the 2 micron filter/water separator from summit racing (made by perma-cool).
Here are the filters I am using in the first (5 micron) filter. DON'T use the one on the left!!! Using the pump I am using I blew the ID out (see next pic). The one on the right has a reinforced ID and is working well SO FAR.
Here is a pic of the filter on the left with a blown ID (didn't even last for 5 gallons).
And here is a pic of the ID of the filter on the right. Notice the reinforced ID. Working well so far.
Hope this helps out some. I would post a pic of my pump hooked up but this site only allows 4 pics per post. If anyone has any more questions just let me know and I will try to answer them.
Jeff
Can you tell me roughly what the total cost of your system was? If you could include the price of the two tanks that would be awesome! By chance, have you figured out a return on investment that this has brought?
LunaTech, do you have an estimate of how long your filters last, or how many gallons they tipically filter before replacement?
Thanks,
Justin

thanks for the info, but I was trying to figure out where you got the fittings that are on top of the filters you have, I see you have hose run into them, but the perma filter has a metal fitting on top, 1 in, and 1 out, same with the house filter. Where did you find these and where can I get them. Thanks

That is correct for a number of reasons. Beside the fact most chains like Jiffy Lube and the like are selling the oil under contract because of the demand for the recovered product is the federal environmental cradle to grave regulations for large quantity generators. There are provisions under RECRA Managing Used Oil | Wastes | US EPA for what is know as a "conditionally exempt small quantity generator" or CESQG that appears on documentation for the products recovered from these generators. The regulations are very clear about chain of custody for the recovered products regardless of generator however the CESQG regs are pretty loose compared to large generators such as Jiffy Lube.
What does this all mean as far as using RMO (recovered motor oil, never "waste")? You probably can find some supply from CESQG sources but be aware, federal and state regulations are very real and if someone from an agency conected to the recovered product monitoring starts poking around it could get ugly. The main problem is the end use, you would not be a recognized end user registered with the EPA and the supply source is not a registered fuel generator, then you may run in to the road tax problem. For those of you making process rigs to clean up you oil to use it for fuel, be aware the sludge and water are very real "waste streams", choose your proper disposal methods and stick to the regulations, they don't joke around about this stuff.
Bottom line, quietly find some small generators, make a deal with them and keep it to yourself.

I use whole house filters for my WVO processing, on advice from Tim Cook over on info-pop, I took a piece of PVC pipe that slid in and fit snuggly inside the center of the filter. I drilled the pipe with a lot of 1/4" holes. The oil flows through the pipe just fine and the pipe is rigid enough to keep the filter from collapsing

capnsac: I have been running a 50/50 mix in my 03 6.0 for almost 1000 miles now. Only complaint is the smell with the windows down and that it smokes at idle when it's cold. Other than that you really can't tell any difference. I was real leary about trying it at first but it seems to be fine and I don't plan on stopping.
BTW, I am using a racor 900fh filter with a 2 micron element and feeding it from a 55 gallon barrel with a rotory handpump. I tried gravity feeding for a while but the filters quickly got to where gravity wasn't enough. The hand pump is a little bit of work but works very well. It takes about 10 mins or so to filter 5 gallons of oil. If anyone is interested in seeing pics of how it's set up I'd be glad to take a few.

Any concerns about getting the WMO or ATF cleaned up before filtering? What I am taliking about is contaminants that may be mixed with the WMO or WATF such as water, coolant, etc that could be the result of a bad head gasket on the vehicle serviced or just lazy mechanics co-mingling waste products in the collection drum. I have one source already that told me I can take the WMO and WATF, but he can't guarantee that his employees will be vigilant in making sure no other junk gets mixed in.
Before I filter WVO, I do a mist wash to address acids, caustic grill cleaners, salts, sugars and so on. Of course, I then need to dry the WVO afterwards. Has anyone done a mist wash on WMO and have tips on doing it successfully?
It may be time for me to do some experimenting. People already call me either Crazy or Stupid for the blend I'm running now, but the $$$ I'm saving lets me tolerate the name calling.
I took a jar and put in a measured amount of water, brake fluid and coolant then on top of that I add WMO. I shook it up real well so it was all mixed together; a frothy homogenous mess. A week later, it appears that the water, brake fluid and coolant have settled out with just the black oil sitting on top.
This makes me feel better that I may be able to mist wash the WMO as I do WVO to neutralize acids and any other contaminants before filtering.
I am still getting enough WVO that I don't see myself going the WMO route real soon, but I want to have a plan in place for the day my WVO dries up.

I second the motion for pics, also what type of hand pump are you using, and where did you get the racor setup? What kind of cost for the unit, and replaceable filters.
THanks,
Justin

Well the tanks and pump were free. I probably have $150 - 200 in everything else. I figured the other day I have already saved approx. $1000 in fuel cost.

Last set lasted for about 150 gallons

I just have 3/4 nipples screwed into the housings I got from lowes (black iron pipe). If you are referring to the pieces the black iron nipples are screwed into, you will need to follow the link to summit racing from my earlier post and order the entire unit. As for the lowes unit, just buy the whole house water filter unit (about $20) and then buy the filters.
Hope this helps.
