wvo 99 psd

i have recently bought a 99psd and was wondering if i can just use very fine filtered wvo in it around 50% mix or less with out any problems? i have been running 50% in my 95 psd for over 2 years with no problems at all. i know the source of the wvo and it is very carefully handled and actualy is filtered before it is disgarded. it is turned over to me in 5 gal clear jugs which so far have not showed any seperation or signs of water. Even a 25% mix would help off set some of the diesel costs. i dont have a huge source of wvo so about 5 gallons a week is all im able to get for now.....any help appreciated

Among the problems people have had from blending is separation. Specifically the animal fats have a tendency to fall out of solution. The best way to see this is put a sample of your 'blend' in a clear bottle and watch it. Use the refrigerator to simulate colder weather. If the oil/fats separate, then when you start truck cold, a cold slug of fatty VO will be the first thing introduced to the filter and engine - not good.

The later-model PSD's (deadheaded) may be the most tolerant diesel engine to run unheated, blended VO in - but many have still had disasterous results. I would stay below 25% and insure your WVO stays in solution. Still, avoiding cold starts (ie, mostly long trips) and extended idling may mitigate problems.

I travel all over the country for work and have met lots of VO'ers. In fact, I got a few 100 gals of oil this year from poor suckers who were blending and f'ed up their trucks/cars. A couple of them even spent the money for the 'secret' ingredient...

Poor atomization and corresponding incomplete combustion is the failure mechanism. VO is more viscous than diesel causing poor atomization and diesel has a flash point of 125-240*F vs. VO which is over 600*. Sure, the engine will run FINE, right up until the carbon build-up/coking becomes bad enough to cause problems...

I always say choose wisely - or PLEASE post pics of the carnage!!
