WVO in the northern climate

After calling few local Restaurants I'm thinking of converting my '87 6.9 to Veggie. I typically only run this truck May to October because it's a 2 wheel drive(have 4 by 4 for winter). I was thinking of HIH fuel lines, heated filter, then a final heat exchanger before the IP. I have a few Q's thanks for input. Will this be enough heat? Can I get by without the HIH lines?

I was thinking of a dedicated line from my rear 50 gallon tank and only sharing the lines for the dino around the IP and injectors and then have another line back to the tank. I was thinking of cheap manual diverter valves under the hood just before the IP and another after the injectors. That way purging would be quick. Can the stock fuel pump handle the heat or viscosity of veg oil? Will I need to use an electric pump? Whats a good pump for minimal cash?

Midsummer night temp.s get down to 40 midday high average about 65-75 degrees Thanks again

Re: WVO in the northern climate

Sounds good. I'd have somekind of heat exchanger in the tank thou. The oil is gonna be pritty thick for the lift pump in the tank, that may go south for the summer, even with heat. Ya might want to incorportae the inline fuel heater before the filter for heat. I don't know thou, don't have a 6.9. Any kind of aftermarket elec. pump should work, some people like the A1000 but, it's pritty spendy.

Good luck!

Re: WVO in the northern climate

I got a purolator facet 4-7 psi 32 gph pump at checker/schuck/kragen parts store and have been told that is an excellent pump for this purpose. If you use bio also it won't eat up seal because they are viton seals. This was only $40. Hope it helps. Try using 2 of these babies. 1 for the dino and 1 for the wvo. That way if you need to purge you can do it easier. Also, I live in Valdez Ak and I am using a 20gal barrel tank with 5/8 aluminum tubing wound heat exchanger, 3/8 tubing wound around my Racor filter, and lastly HIH to my greasecar 3 way valve. Hope this help.

Re: WVO in the northern climate

Aaron would you happen to have a model no. for that electric perolator pump you describe? Did you make your own tank heater? Why aluminum tube? Thanks

Re: WVO in the northern climate

Not a problem. The part number I believe is pro42sv. Here is the link to their catalog. It is a cube or posi flo. They are basically the same pump. The posi is just quieter. I did make my own heat exchanger. I used aluminum because I was told that copper is subject to stress crack from vibration... ie a diesel truck. no what I mean. Aluminum is made for use in auto application and is must more pliable. I learned a little trick after I pinched my first one. Unroll and cut off the amount you want to use, pinch the end so nothing can come out of it and fill it with salt or sand(which ever is easier to find), shake to get it all through it to the very top. Then picn off the other end to make it like a pixy stick(so the salt doesn't come out), then just wrap it around a cylinder of some sort depending on how tight you want it to be. Next, just take a tubing cutter and cut the pinched ends off and dump all of the salt out. Use air compressor to blow every last bit out. Just use compression fittings to install it into the tank. I will send pics of my tank and HIH fittings so you can see. Some people insist on using copper for these, but remember what I said. I use black iron tees and steel 3/4 nipples and just paint them. Anyway, I will send the photos soon. Hope it helps...Aaron

Re: WVO in the northern climate

Cool! Thanks. Good tips, I will follow. I'm guessing your fuel pickup line follows close to the heat exchanger then?
