WVO plus #2 Diesel

Can filter 20% WVO be mixed with 80% #2 diesel with out haveing problems? Or do you have to process it before mixing it?

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

yes just as long as it is filtered real good no problem I haven't been able to yet but I have heard some people say they are running up to 80% wvo it just has not been warm enough yet for me

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

I run 50/50 no problem and have gone up to 75/25 still no problem. I did add a in line filter before the pump but other than that no change to the stock fuel system.

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

I only filter to 10 microns , but the lower the better .

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

How are you guys mixing? Do you just get down to 1/4 tank, toss in some SVO and then top of with #2? I guess my question is do I have to blend the fuel outside of the truck?

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

I never premix outside the truck. Usually I run the front tank empty and then put in 5 gal of #2,15 gallons of vwo on top of that and finish filling it with #2 For the rear I wait till its below ½ and then put in 5 gal #2 and 5 gal wvo.

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

I'm new to the WVO stuff, so please excuse my ignorance.

I have a '04 PSD and I plan to filter down WVO to 2 microns. If I mix the filtered WVO to half a tank of #2 diesel (or bio-diesel) will this mess with the injectors or anythink else in a stock setup?

Basically will 50/50 work or should I go heavier on the diesel side?

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

It sounds like you have a 6 litre PSD, so I'd start out at 20%...you can always work up slowly, but why risk a problem starting all out with a high ratio?

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

Sorry for my ignorance. I am new to the WVO, bio-fuels scene and want to make it work in my truck and possibly some farm equipment.

What I have read here are some people “washing” WVO then using it 100% in their vehicles. Others are simply filtering WVO and then blending it with #2 diesel?

If I go to a mom & pop’s Chinese restaurant or to a friend’s deep fryer get their used veg. oil, filter it down below the factory fuel filter micron specs, blend it with some #2 and I can burn it in my truck? Can I do all this without setting up a washer, etc?

I appreciate any info.
Tim

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

I've run 50/50 with no problem, but I think the key to it is mixing. When I fill up I have 17 gallons of WVO in 5 gallon jugs, I use the jug with the 2 gallons in it to start the mixing in. Yes it is a bit of a pain but I only have to do it about every other week. I have poured unmixed WVO in the tank, you can tell it goes straight to the bottom of the tank without mixing, the fuel pump gets a little louder. On the safe side I think it's best to add unmixed WVO after a good drive with a warm engine. I filter down to 2 microns before it goes into the tank.

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

If just filtering the WVO and mixing it with #2 works, why are people putting all the time and energy into making bio-diesel?

Am I missing something here?

Re: WVO plus #2 Diesel

Bio does better at cooler temperatures than SVO. If you live where it gets cold, you may not be able to blend at all in the winter.

JoJon: What filter are you using to get down to 2 microns. I found a 5 micron paper element and anything lower is glass which is a bit spendy it you ask me.

WVO typically needs HEAT to be run straight. Even mixing with #2 diesel, I personally get nervous over about 20% oil to fuel. Until we get a few more trucks with 100,000 miles on a fairly straight diet of WVO, im just skiddish.

Bio-Diesel on the other hand has quite a history of being safe, and lots of backing from both grassroots and commercial ventures. Lots more research into engine wear and the like. Bio-diesel is also not as cold sensitive as regular WVO.

At this point, its preference. I personally prefer Bio-D, but if I can rig my truck up with the FN-74 vegistroke style system, I might be tempted to run straight oil

Two things:

1) When you say HEAT, are you talking about a chemical addititve?, or temperature?

2) With a 50/50 mix what temperature range are we talking about? (I live in San Diego, CA)

I filled a mayo jar with a 50/50 mix and stuck it in the freezer. No gel! This seems too simple. Is there something else that I'm missing?
