What type of pumps are you using to get the WVO out of the grease traps. I want to use an electric motor connected to a pump of some kind (oil pump off a car?) Anyone got any brilliant ideas=cheap LOL. Can this be done has anyone ever done it before. If not please point me in the correct direction, as I am almost ready to make my Bio-Diesel.

Best overall is find a used 1" or 2" trash pump with a gas engine. Not especially cheap but will handle chunks of stuff well. Many other style pumps are being used with some degree of success. Using an oil pump may cause problems sucking up chunks and will likely be slow
Good ol 5 gallon bucket!! IT slices, it dices, it chops it.... Handles chunks, solids, thick grease, hot oil, and everything inbetween. Cheap, reliable, and only takes a few sodas and a burger to power it!! . Only draw back is a little messy. . Actually for the longest time I used a 2galloon bucket to transfer to a pair of 5 gallons, which I then dumped in the 55 galon drum. Only takes about 10 minutes to fill a 55 gallon drum.
With that said, it is a pain in the but, messy and I will probably look into a trash pump when I get home as well. But it is cheap and effective
I've got a brand new TEEL trash pump that I won off Ebay this spring. It has a 3.5 HP briggs motor on it. All I've done with it is add oil+fuel and start it with the garden hose in the pump to keep everything wet. Runs like a new pump should. I haven't pumped oil with it. I'm going to use vacuum and a free hot water tank to collect oil. Let me know if you are interested. May stick it on Ebay sometime soon.

I got a good deal on it so I'd let it go for $140 + shipping which would just be whatever FedEx ground is from 05446 (yes Vermont). I'm not out to screw people over. Although this wouldn't be an Ebay transaction you can checkout my Ebay feedback HERE.
Check out some pictures HERE.
I have the exact same vac pump kicking around my shop. Seems pretty wimpy to me but never actually used it for anything. Will it create enough vacuum in a tank like that to suck out thick oil?
Have you tried it yet?

Can you explain this? Are you just going by the fact that it's a 3.5 hp? There are others using a 3.5 hp Honda pump.
I haven't pumped oil with it. As I said earlier in the post the only thing I did was stick a hose in it with water on to keep everything wet. The manual says to keep the seals wet. I think I have video of this somewhere if you are interested. I can even post it on the net.

Sounds like you guys are talking about two different pumps. The Trash pump with a 3.5 hp engine isn't a vacuum pump, as DZLJIM seems to think. It probably would work pretty good, is it a 2" suction or a 1.5"?

Well come on.
I knew what I was talking about!
I was refering to the vac pump, not the trash pump. The small vac pump I have is/was designed for small vac tanks to operate wheelchair lift type apparatus on vans that are operated by vac stuff. It doesn't seem like it would do much with that large of a tank, sucking that thick of oil. Maybe it will. I don't know.

What I have heard about operations with vacuum pumps is it's not the strength of the pump, its how much vacuum you pull in the tank.
Basically it's outside air pressure that pushes the oil up the hose and into the tank. Read some figure like 29 inches of vacuum is 10 PSI for the oil. If you have a large pump you can get the tank down to 29 inches in five ten minutes, small pump might take an hour. We have a small vacuum pump on our power brakes; there has been some talk about using that pump to empty a pickup tank.
