03 turbo removal

I am trying to remove my turbo. I go ttyhe front 2 bolts out but the back rounded(of course). At this point ther are 2 low profile and 1 normal "Bolt-out" sockets under the turbo, somewhere. Can't see them, can't feel them. Couldn't get the downpipe out of the rest of the exhaust so I pulled the hanger off and that give me some more room. Anybody have any words of wisdom, tips tricks ect to get that last bolt out? this is the early pedestal that has all three bolts horizontal. Also when (if) I get the turbo out and it is bad does the later pedestal fit in? If it is not bad I will just clean it and put it back in. I'm already replacing the intercooler because the boost got way too high and blew the end tank off.

Cut off wheel in a mini die grinder... some guys get brave and torch the head of the bolt off... the problem is usually "stiction" between the flange at the bolt head and the pedestal rather than siezed threads..

I have heard of some guys getting really brutal with a prybar... not my cup of tea. I keep at least one unused 10mm, high quality, unused socket in my chest for these instances.

try a 3/4 turbo socket/salvage socket (whatever you want to call it) and tap it over the spacer between bolt and pedastal and try backing it out.

I'm in the same boat right now. Got the front two off with ease and used a brand new 6 point 10mm socket on the back it absolutely wouldn't budge and now it's stripped. I know I can get a dremel in there with a cut-off wheel, so I've considered that if it will work...and if I cut the head off, is that a guarantee that the turbo will come out if the other two bolts are off?

But what the heck is a turbo/salvage socket? and do you mean tapping it over the built in washer/spacer attached to the bolt head?

I'll take any advice I can get, I have a new up-pipe and other things coming from river city diesel this week so I have to get in there...

I din't think of that, trying to get on the spacer. I am thinking the salvage socket would be the same as the craftsman"Bolt-out"? Also does anyone know if you get a replacement turbo do you need a new pedestal and is a later pedestal a direct replacement?

Also I only get to work on this on the weekend so the turbo is still in the truck

turbo/salvage socket is a socket used to tap onto a rounded of bolt head. As stated, the craftsman "bolt out" is the same thing.

Thanks, Dj. Tapped the socket over the spacer and it came right out. Its cleaned and put back in but will have to come out again as there was some dagage to the blades of the turbine. I don't have the big bucks for a new turbo so it will have to do til we can work it into the budget

Another update on getting at the back bolt....

After much frustration, ordered a 10mm turbo-socket and used that, and a 3/8 air ratchet on the back turbo bolt.

Came right out!
