Re: 04' dies while driving..

I wish I had an answer for you. Mine used to stumble and then surge at at stop every so often. Now it just dies.

Ford rep gets his phone call Monday, and it will be scheduled in for the fourth try to fix. Dealer hasn't been able to replicate the problem, even when I told them it is much more common at night when it is cooler.

I also told them I will not tow with it until I am confident that it will not have any more issues.

Re: 04' dies while driving..

Wire or wire harness chafing has been a problem. Centrifugal force of turn might make the wires move enough to short out.

Re: 04' dies while driving..

The most common place by far is right out of the ficm at the valve cover. While it is running. (SAFELY) push down on the wires that are coming out of the ficm. this is the module on the drivers side valve cover. push the wires into the valve cover. if you have a bare wire it may/should stall. Also when it stalls do you see the glow plug or any lights come on. like the key was just turned on and off?

Like the others have said. It's a chaffed wiring harness. You're seeing the PCM cycle.

Re: 04' dies while driving..

Do me a favor and check your oil level if it is too high it may be the cause. Please post your findings.

Re: 04' dies while driving..

Our 04 died twice at around 3,000 miles. First time it restarted the second it did not and left us stranded with 5th wheel in tow in a remote part of Idaho with no cell phone service. It was a long day! It turned out to be the wiring harness which they replaced. Also the tranny would kick out of tow/haul mode. They said it was all related. Hope this helps.

Re: 04' dies while driving..

It seems to me that this could be a potentially dangerous problem. I wonder why FMC has not stepped up efforts to recall and repair this problem before someone or a family is killed.
