P0488 is for the EGR Throttle Plate - not moving or out of parameters. THis component is located at the intake manifold inlet where the cold side charge air cooler duct connects. It's purpose is to close at varying positions to assist in EGR flow under certain conditions. You can pull off the CAC tube and the goose-neck at the intake and inspect it, move it by hand with the ignition off to see if it moves freely. If my memory serves me it should sweep when the ignition is turned on. All of the faults with these I have heard about were corrected with a new throttle plate assembly. The diagnostics for this component rely on having a Ford IDS
Thanks Ford Doctor. I'll check it out. If I remember correctly, that butterfly valve was removed from later years because it didn't really work as intended. Too bad it can't be deleted from the 04s. A free-flowing elbow at that location would really improve air flow.
Per Ford Doctor's reply, I planned on replacing the EGR Throttle plate assembly. The engine was running well with the 0488 code showing, so I was putting off replacing the EGR plate assembly until I had a few days off work (which is now). I am now getting codes 0488 and 1334 Throttle Position Sensor Minimum Stop, and the engine has developed a quick surge. Engine will run smooth, then all of a sudden, will surge, then go back to normal, sometimes will run rough for a while after the surge. I'm guessing the throttle position sensor is part of the EGR throttle plate assembly? And if I replace the assembly, it should take care of both codes? I had removed the butterfly valve plate several years ago and have had zero problems. ANY advice is most welcome!!! THANKS for any and all replies!!
Dealer says Ford does not make the EGR throttle plate assembly any more, and there are none in stock anywhere that the parts guy could find. The truck will run without it, but will not pass smog check now because of the code. What are the options on this besides pick a part auto supply? I havent found any after market parts for this application.
And if that wasn't bad enough, the throttle position sensor is $1000. Parts has one of those. Again, anyone know of any options on this part as well?
OK, further checking - The dealer gave me wrong info on the TPS. He gave me info on the fuel pedal TPS, not the one on the EGR throttle plate assembly. The early 04 6.0 had a replaceable TPS on the EGR assembly, But I cant find out if the sensor on the late 04 6.0 is replaceable. There is a TSB on it. Ford TSB 18607. Does anyone have access to this TSB? It might help...THANKS!!!
All I have is a Broadcast message on it: 2004 SuperDuty and Excursions built after 9-29-03, EGR Throttle Valve Concerns:
Some trucks may exhibit an intermittent crank/no start concern. EGR throttle valve position codes P0488 or P1334 may also be present. Visually inspect the EGR throttle valve under the intake elbow to verify it is not stuck closed. Normal operation is for the valve to cycled closed, then open when the key is turned on. Broadcast Message 4235.
Trucks reprogrammed with WDS version B36.10 and higher may set P0488 and/or P1334 for the EGR throttle valve position sensor. Engineering is investigating this problem. If normal diagnosis does not show a faulty component, do not attempt a repair at this time. Broadcast Message 4245, 4544.
As you know, the assembly, including the sensor is no longer available from Ford:
Part #: 4C3Z-9B742-ARM (was 4C3Z-9B742-BA)
However - EBAY is amazing at times (I doubt you want it this bad though):
Thanks BISMIC! The price of the part from Future Ford is pretty close to the price I was quoted from Ventura ford (IF the part was available, which it isn't).
Big problem here in California with this. You can't pass smog if there are codes showing that are part of the emissions systems. Now you can't register your vehicle, sale price will take a nosedive. Wonderful.
