04B24 and Rear Driveshaft

I had the Trans program 04B24 performed back in February. My question is, would they have had reason to remove the rear driveshaft or take the carrier bearing loose? Right after putting my 3000 lb camper on yesterday I noticed a shudder in the rearend from a stop a couple of times and thought nothing of it, thinking maybe it was the shaft slip joint shifting from the added load. Drove the truck today about 5 miles and the shuddering from a stop seemed to be getting worse, when all of a sudden I heard a banging and clanging noise from the rear end and pulled over into a parking lot. I crawled under the truck and found one of the carrier bearing mounting bolts missing and the other one about ready to fall out. The rear shaft had been bouncing back and forth between the forward muffler clamp and the fuel tank metal shield with no apparent damage other than scuffed metal. I did manage to get another bolt from a local Napa store that was open and bolt the carrier bearing back up. I find it hard to believe that these bolts came loose on their own. I did check under the truck after they did the recall, but I don,t believe I checked that far aft. I definatly will in the future and let the dealer know about it.

Re: 04B24 and Rear Driveshaft

Some techs drop the hanger bearing, some don't when removing the transmission.

Re: 04B24 and Rear Driveshaft

Grampy Jim, Thanks for the reply. I do believe they loosened the hanger bearing when they pulled the transmission and forgot to tighten it back up. I realize it was probably an honest mistake and everybody makes mistakes.

I can,t believe I did not catch it myself in the half a dozen times I have been under the truck since. I am going to let the dealer know about it though, so it can be noted on my paperwork in case I have problems with it in the future.

Re: 04B24 and Rear Driveshaft

Mine did the same thing on the drive home from the dealer.. 3 threads holding it from dropping out. The dealer rushed two new bolts down to me so I could leave town. I red loctited them this time.....

Re: 04B24 and Rear Driveshaft

Exact same thing happened to me. Got it home and crawled under and saw one bolt gone and the other ready to go. Very embarrased tech who did the job was at my house in 30 minutes to replace the bolt and make sure everything was tight. I know it's the last step and can get overlooked if you get destracted or in a rush, but it sure can raise the hair on your neck after just having your tranny opened up.

Scott B and MoeB, Thanks for the reply guys.
I kind of figured, this had to have happened to someone else.
