I have an '05 that is all stock. It has 61k miles on it. It has missed a little when cold during wet weather in the past but not bad. It rained this morning and this morning I started it with no problem. It idled for a bit. Then the second I applied the brake it stumbled and stalled. Each attempt to restart after that would restart only for a couple of seconds and stall again. Any ideas? Any good tools that are not too expensive to get codes? I wonder if it is throwing any.
Before you spend any money on a code finder check to see if you can use a paperclip to insert in the code box, I had a 1989 GMC and I could use either paperclip or a two prong electrical terminal and insert in the (A) and (B) of the port and the codes would blink through the ceck engine soon light so maybe you ccan do that on your truck too with out having to spend $80.
DO NOT TRY THE PAPER CLIP PROCEDURE AS YOU WILL FRY THE PCM. & POP SOME FUSES. have the codes retreived is your best bet. there has to be some contiuous codes in there. the icp sensor may be shorting at the pigtail. or the ipr pigtail may be losing connection. get the codes & let us know what you find.
Paperclip only works on OBD I type vehicles basicly up to 1996. Anything after that is OBD II and will require some type of code reader. No idea which ones are good or bad, but some are fairly inexpensive. They will usually give the abillity to read the code and clear it.
Good Luck.

OK... got an OBDII reader and it came up "No Codes". I know it is working because I am able to get other info from the truck. Now what. Help! Now I am really stumped.
Possibly a fuel pump fuse or fuel pump wires chafed along the frame somewhere. Can you hear the fuel pump come on? If you cant hear it then turn the key on and put your hand on the hcfm and feel for a buzz.
Yes I hear it buzz, but it seems to run longer than normal. Would this guy not throw a code if it was having a problem? I did notice that when I installed the frame mounted fuel filter this time it seemed to catch a little as I was screwing on the cap. The strange thing is that I drove it over 100 miles since then with out problem. I also pulled the engine mounted filter last night and it is full of fuel... but that doesn't mean it has enough pressure for the injectors. I guess it does keep pointing at fuel supply though. Would other problems (other than fuel supply) throw codes?
I have more info. Tonight I pulled the drain plug out of the HFCM and turned on the key. Some fuel came out so I cycled the key off and on. And a little more came out.
Should fuel been coming out of this guy at pressure? Seems like it should have very quickly been blasting out of there?
did you tighten the cap all the way till it bottomed out flush w/ the hfcm housing? too bad you don't have a gauge to check the pressures. i too think it is a fuel pressure concern. fuel pressure concerns will set a underboost or overboost code in memory though. i've had some where the pump would hum & put a gauge on it & pressures would be low. replaced the pump & all good.
Yep... still no codes. I give up. It is getting towed to the dealer tomorrow. Their going to have $ $ in their eyes. Oh well... I know that chances are it is going to be something not covered by the 100k miles warrenty. We will see.
did you perform the scan on all the tests? koeo on demand, koeo cont., koer on demand? just getting cont. codes is not enough.i still believe like you said, it has to be a fuel delivery concern. they sometimes will not set a code unless there is a power issue w/ pressure or restriction in the system from the tank to the upper filter. i was thinking that the cap on the hfcm was not tight enough & was trying to suck air. have seen this happen before. the dealer will probably install a flight recorder & test drive it to see whats up w/ it. also it can be monitored while using the datalogger on their diog. equipment. soory your having so much problems. they will figure it out.
