I am new here and hope someone can help me out. I just purchases an '05 F350. I thought I checked everything out really well before buying it but now I am having a problem. I was hauling a horse trailer up an incline with out any problems. I was going around 70 mph when all of a sudden I lost most of the power, the check engine light came on, and the engine started overheating. I talked to the dealer that sold this truck to me and he said it sounded like the thermostat. He said that the thermostat has a fail safe that shuts power off to the engine when it overheats and that I would just need to replace the thermostat. I have heard alot of bad things about this diesel engine but needed to upgrade so I took a chance. Does this sound like a possible quick fix or am I into an expensive fix?
Hope your under warrenty still. Is the degas bottle look like it has white residue all over it and the air box? Probably a blocked up oil cooler, mine overheated when that happened. Could be Head gaskets too.

I did not see any smoke so I am hoping it was not the head gasket. I understand that the oil cooler is not covered under a warranty either but that you may be able to bypass it if needed.

Oil cooler should be covered under the 5 year, 100,000 mile engine warranty.
you dont live in Sarasota Fl do you? there was a truck on a dealer lot we looked at, and it had warped heads, and bad headgaskets, aswell as a bad egr system. Truck looked real nice and had an awesome chip, but the motor was toast.

A white crust around the degas bottle will tell you you have bad gaskets, no crust and you probably are ok there.... You can change the thermostat yourself, just like you would on any engine just be sure to use the ford gold or zerex G05 antifreeze and distilled water to refill the rad. I would also take it back to the selling dealer and make sure it has the latest computer flash. Some of the trucks were having issues with the fan turning on too late or not at all. While it was overheating you should have heard the fan running (sounds like you are being passed by a jet plane - you will literally say to yourself "what the *ell is that"). If you did not hear the fan go on then that would be the starting point. It is electrically controlled by the computer, make sure the wire is still connected. Also...some of the trucks had bad dashes that would show an overheat but there really wasn't, this was in the 04's i think but if you have an job 1 05 it could be a possibility. Approach the dealer about this at the same time you ask about what software (flash) the truck has. good luck and don't panic.
I heard the fan come on and do not see an white crust. I did find out some interesting stuff from a Ford dealer about the truck. Apparently the transmission has been repaired once and replaced once, the turbo has been overhauled, and the EGR valve has been replaced three times.
Thanks for all of the help. I really appreciate the responses. I have one last question. Does any one know how I could get a full repair history on this truck? I called my local dealer and they indicated that they could only pull the last 60 days and only on their location.
naw, any dealer can give you an oasis report which will tell you all warranty repairs done to the truck. They just look up your VIN. I would not worry about the egr replacements, the egr is an issue, i am on my 3rd myself. I am surprised about the trans the ts has been very stout. Did the truck have a snow plow mounted in it?
