05 with minor issue, EGR related? (Long)

FEB 05 Build date, STOCK F-250 auto, CC lariat-2900 miles, already had ford do 1 free oil & filter-motorcraft powerstroke 15-40, no fuel additive, front crank seal hanging drip/leak, never any check engine or water in fuel light. Truck has run great overall, fuel mileage is normal/good, 19.0-20 higway, 12-14 town.

My wife complained the other day that the truck hesitated then surged, with a lot of blue/white smoke when moving slowly from a stop. I had something similar happen. Important to note that the engine was not fully warmed up with the guage reading between cold and normal operating temp position both times. In my experience, I was at a stop sign and the engine temp needle was between cold and normal operating temp position. I eased into the throttle and the truck took off like normal. I was either in first or second when the following occured. Engine sound was the normal ramp-up/accelerate for a bit then the engine went silent (no normal diesel clanking), like when I'm in Tow/Haul and letting the engine brake/decelerate on a down-hill. I look in my rear view mirror and there is large plume of blue smoke and still shooting out the exhaust. I never let off the throttle, but I increased it slightly and the "dead spot" of silence seemed to get somewhat louder (like something was working harder) as a result of the slight increase of the throttle. The blue smoke was very thick behind me, like a smokescreen on the old spyhunter game. Then there was a "release", where the engine sound came back to normal and the blue smoke decreased considerably, but not gone completely. My wife says, is that normal, I say I don't think so. Duration from the being stopped to when the engine noise came back/smoke subdued was approx. 4-6 seconds and power seemed constant but slightly hesitant during the "silent" part.

I keep in tune with the truck in regards to how it operates/sounds/gauges. At least 3 times a week I take her on a very steep grade where I keep a steady boost between 22-26 psi (factory guage approx reading) for a good 12 seconds. The boost never fluctuates and no "farts" yet.

We never let the truck idle more than a minute when cold, except at stop lights, etc. I always try to bring the truck up to normal temps on every outing, before shutdown, but the wife makes the common "grocery-getter" trips where the truck never gets up to normal operating temps.

Also, I get a hell of a lot of blue smoke when I am in Park, the truck is at about halfway to normal operating temp. and I bring the throttle up and hold at 1400-1500 rpms, to "mimick" an AIC.
I do not notice any excessive smoke on extended trips when the engine is up to normal temp.

Any input is appreciated. Have not gone to service yet, hoping it's isolated instance.

Re: 05 with minor issue, EGR related? (Long)

There's not much to know without at least reading codes.... If you can give (and the SA can write it down) a good description of what it takes to repeat the concern(s), a talented tech can monitor engine conditions.

These systems are near impossible to fix simply by symptom desription...

Re: 05 with minor issue, EGR related? (Long)

Thanks, will look into finding out if there are any codes, and what they are (dealer visit). I had a VAG/COM diagnostic tool for my Audi S-4 (would show codes plus a whole lot more). Is there a similar device for my superduty? I'll do some more searching.
