My friend has an '05 6.0/auto/4.10s, 4x4, drw, King Ranch with all the options including tow command. It was bought before the Tow Boss package was available, so no 4.30s. 12,000 miles. Anyway, he's towing a two car car hauler Denver to Moab today. 65 degrees, ~ 14,000lb traile weight (GCW of around 23). Whenever it pulls a big hill the coolant guage goes to the red, then the fans come on and then it drops back to normal. He says it has done this repeatly on most of this hills. Now these are steep grades, at 7-11 000' altitude, so I'm sure the truck is running WOT at about 45-50 mph up them. (The 7.3 would do this with only 8 k lb in tow). He is runnign in tow haul mode, and the truck is completely stock.
I know I read in the fall this was normal, is that correct? Is any damage occurring do to this? He isn't exceeding any limits of the truck but it is close to them.
My truck does the exact same thing, but I have yet to get a solid answer as to whether or not the temp is actually as high as the guage says. I read the same info as you, and to date I have had no problems from this. Maybe someone with more info can chime in?

My '04 temp guage never moves once it reaches normal temp. I run in the foot hills of SC pulling a 9000# travel trailer. I have done so in 90 deree weather with the air on full blast. I would not think this is "normal". My guess (and it's only that) would be an air cavity in the cooling system, or a problem with the fan system, or a tranny issue. I would not accept it as is.

Here's the TSB ..... Temperature Gauge Reads Hot, 05 F-Series:
Some trucks built before 12-10-04 may have a temp gauge reading at the top of the green normal band or into the red hot band, with normal coolant temperatures. If no overheat condition is present, the instrument cluster should be replaced. If there is a code in the engine computer for ECT over 240 degrees, or if coolant is being expelled from the degas bottle, do not replace the cluster. Diagnose the overheat condition.

Mine did the exact same thing the other week when i was towing my 5th wheel home from the mountains. Gauge went to the red zone then the fan came on and after 5 - 10 seconds the needle dropped back to the normal zone. Called the dealer and he confirmed that this is normal.

Both my Chevy and Dodge have actual engine and trans temp gauge with real numbers not just red and "normal". Of course, I did add the trans temp on the Dodge, but the Chevy came stock....
