2000 mile trip coming up, should I change the oil?
The last oil change and the future ones, I planned on changing @ 7500 mile intervals. I'm getting ready to embark on a 2000 mile move from NY to CO pulling a ~9000lb enclosed trailer. The last time I changed my oil was 9/25/06 at 15,500 miles. Currently I'm showing ~19,100 miles on the odo.
Should I change the oil?
Thanks guys!!

Re: 2000 mile trip coming up, should I change the oil?
I've found my truck is much much happier with 5K mile oil changes, regardless of what Ford says. If you read the new info from Ford on the 6.4L engine, I think most of our trucks would qualify as "severe duty" which means 5K mile oil changes on the 6.0L so my truck's happiness with that even makes sense. Personally, I'd change the oil now.

Re: 2000 mile trip coming up, should I change the oil?
Most change their oil at 5k miles with 15w40 oil. I would change it now so you do not have to worry about it for a while. No need to have to deal with that and any issues that pop up once you get to CO.
Re: 2000 mile trip coming up, should I change the oil?
only one way to know for sure......oil sample, test for wear metal, contaminates, and additive package on a reg. basis. (we ran our kenworths w/cumins 10,000 to 20,000 miles b-4 changing oil)
Re: 2000 mile trip coming up, should I change the oil?
I would, I change mine every 5K on the severe schedule even though the truck is not put through very many severe conditions. Even at 15qts of oil I figure it is cheap insurance.

I would also go ahead and change it. Now are you going to use 15-40 or 10-30? You're going from one colder-n-hell place to another; if you're currently using 15-40 and it runs fine I'd stick with it.

Withtout a trend in oil analysis it's impossible to say how the oil is holding up in your engine based on your driving habits, etc.
In my case the oil viscosity sheared to a low 30 weight by 5-6K miles so that's when I change it.

Colorado, eh? If you are leaving this weekend, know that Denver is looking at snow Mon, Tues, and Weds. Surely, not pleasant towing weather. After this storm leaves Denver, it will track across the midwest... right into the path of you coming our way. Pretty much anytime next week would be bad to take the drive, weather-wise. Come in from the 80 (as opposed to the 70) and I think you will do better. have a great drive!
