Okay, bought this beauty at auction with about 20 of the same all lined up. Started right up, ran strong with some smoking, but great power and smooth idle. Stopped for fuel a few times, off, than restart no problem. On the forth stop, sat for a few minutes, then no go for restart. Cranks normally but no response. 121,000 miles. Any troubleshooting procedures MUCH appreciated. I really hate the "lets change parts randomly technique".... but I see a lot of talk about the crank and cam sensor [?]
I would check with the dealer and give them the vin # of the truck. There is also an online site you can check but I do not have it handy. They can check if cam sensor has been replaced. If it has a recall no charge. It usually is an intermittent problem and will start after sitting for a while. The other thing I would suggest is do a search for hard start/no start diagnostics. You should find a lot of information on this topic. Also, you may want to check the EGR valve. They are prone to getting clogged up on these trucks. I don't know if this would affect starting. Are you getting a check engine light? If it has been sitting at an auction for a while I would also charge up the batteries.

Thanks for the tip, I'll start there. Why would this engine start after sitting?? After more reading, I begin to think that this engine is a real troublemaker i.e. POS ?
The dealer can also give you a report on the vehicle as to the things that have been done under warranty. This will give you an idea if this vehicle has been a problem child. Some of the 6.0's are great trucks and some are a big headache from what I read. Also, another good check if you get it started again would be the alternator. I think it should read 13.5vdc or greater across the batteries at idle.

Called my ford dealer whose service manager pulled up this trucks history in a moment and for no charge [!] read off the whole story. Really amazing information age we live in. But no big stories there. He suggested a high pressure internal oil leak, and offered a very non reccommended test by using some starting fluid in the drain tube of the air box - if it try's to start it's the high pressure oil leak - if not, then start checking the sensors. I was impressed with his honesty about using a bit of starting fluid that the owners manual says guarantees instant death of the engine. Of course that does not absolve ford of selling this engine that is far too complicated for man to manage.
I have a John deere dozer and excavator that has diesel engines WITHOUT glow plugs and WITHOUT starting fluid injection systems that start on the FIRST turn with one battery when the engine is covered in 3 feet of snow.... and runs like a sewing machine. Now go and figure why Ford would choose to build this crappy engine when such perfect examples of American engine art are in use... If i could fit that JD engine into my Ford and mate it to the tranny, no one would ever buy a toyota again. ever.
Any comments on the ford service guys reccomendations?
Ditto on the starting fluid. I would try to find a tech familiar with this engine or
bring it to a ford dealer. My guess would be a high pressure oil leak. Would be my
guess due to the fact that it had been driven and then wouldnt start hot. Sometimes
vehicle will start with a high pressure oil leak cold and then when engine gets hot and
oil thins, it will not build up the 500 psi of pressure to run the injectors. 03's were
known for high pressure oil pumps also. Good luck!!
Has anyone - out of frustration- ever thought of replacing the 6,0 with a gas engine? Is it at all possible? I paid 5,000$ for the truck, 2003 f350 with 121,000 miles, 2wd automatic- The thought of another 5,000$ in repairs and low reliability is not too tasty. Get it running and trade it in that day?
Still no go? Have you checked all the basics like fuses? It could be a issue with the HPOP system. Do a search for HPOP on this site. If the pressure is not high enough the computer will not let the injectors fire. Pretty hard to tell without pulling any codes to get started. You may also want to check your fuel filter and make sure it has diesel inside.

Okay heres the hit: Oil filter full of steel and aluminum, oil bypass stuck open with metal, not allowing engine to start. Mechanics got this POS to run on 7 cylinders, code said no assist from cylinder 1. So I can limp this thing home and maybe let the dog sleep in it? I cannot imagine putting another such engine back into it... can anyone comment on what gas engine might bolt to the tranny? Buy a used engine, pray a lot, and trade it in? Does Ford ding you on these diesels on trade in? They must know better than any whats going on with them... Any thoughts appreciated.
Sounds like you got bent over on that one. Sorry to hear that. I think it may just be better to part it out and recoupe some of your money. If you can get vehicles from an auction I can't see investing the money in it. You could put a 5.4 or the V10. You would need at least a new computer and new wiring harness. Probably more but on no expert on that.
