2003 F-350 w/ 6.0L TurboDiesel, should I run away?

Hi everyone,
I have a chance to pick up a 2003 F-350XLT but it has the 6.0L diesel. I love the truck and it looks and runs great BUT I've read nothing but bad things about that particular diesel. Is this engine getting a bad rap or should I keep looking? I could really use some advice.

Thank you,
Tim

well your gonna get mixed reviews, the 6.0 can be a great motor but NOT mod friendly(tuner or chip)without headstuds and some other work.6.0 produces more power than the great 7.3 but at the same time may not be as reliable.if you drive the truck like it should be driven, service it and dont chip it,itll probably be a decent truck.i will say though i believe out of all the 6.0s 03/04 are the most probleamtic years.so use your judgement and go from there.good luck

Have a local Ford dealer run the VIN for an OASIS report. This will list all the repair work done by Ford dealerships to that truck. If you see things that you don't like then don't buy it.

The 6.0 got a bad rap from people modding the snot out of them, then expecting Ford to fix their screw-up. If the OASIS comes back with minor stuff, but the truck and have fun!

I've got a 2003 F-250 with the 6.0 and I've had no problems at all. My understanding is that with the 6.0's, its a 50/50. It depends on the amount of miles and work done on the truck. If there is more than 30k miles and there has'nt been any problems....then you should be good as long as you have the truck.

just dont mod the 6.0 and it can be a good motor, but stay on top of your maintnence.

Like HA said - OASIS. If its private party, ask for maint. records. If they don't have any - walk. If its lifted, walk. If it has a 4" cat back & gauges - good bet. If it has an aftermarket intake - walk.

I don't trust guys who mod for more power to know how to use the truck for its intended use & not beat on it. Same for those that lift it. The truck is designed as a med duty hauler / tower & it works best when on the road at or under 2k rpms for as long as you can keep it rolling.

Use it regularly, get it up to temp, keep it right around 2k roms (some up some down ok), DON'T IDLE IT OVER 3 MIN's if you can at all help it. Don't use it for short trips, groceries. Do use it to tow a 6 to 12k trailer & have fun.

I have an 03 6.0 and I bought it with 118,000 miles on it. I wanted it to have high miles so that all the bugs would've been worked out of it. Besides the HPOP that went out shortly after I got it, it runs like a champ. 100% stock but I'm dying to upgrade. Just want to do it safely to improve the running of it with whatever power it will get me. I'm more concerned with longevity and don't know if modding it at all will improve on that.
