2004 6.0 EGR problem...SOLVED

I have a 2004 F250 that developed the following problem at 24K miles:

Within about fifteen minutes of starting, the engine developed what felt like a miss. After a few minutes, the problem cleared, only to return at about the same time into the next day's drive. This time, the engine shut itself off at a stoplight. I took the truck in to have it checked. The tech told me that he couldn't re-create he problem and that the previous incidents didn't throw any codes, indicating to him that the problem didn't exist.

The trouble returned like clockwork the next day, again at a stoplight. This time, however, the engine sputtered and then REVVED to about 1800 RPM, almost catapulting me into the intersection! Again, the tech saw no issues when I brought it in.

I read some of the forum threads dealing with EGR issues. I decided to check the valve myself. The thing was completely clogged. Since cleaning and reinstalling the valve, I've had no further trouble.

I've got to wonder how good Ford's techs are, given that someone with no diesel experience was able to clear a problem that a tech knew nothing about, just by reading a few posts on Dieselstop!

I have always said clean these egr valve. There are many who think it's waste of time. If your tail pipe is black with soot, then your valve will build up and stop working some day. This is a design on these trucks to bring soot back into the engine for EPA. It's just a matter of time.
