I just verified that it is not in the 2005 Diesel Supplement, but it is in the 2006 Diesel Supplement:

Verbiage:

Oils, Fluids and Flushing
In many cases, fluid discoloration is a normal operating characteristic of
the chemical compound and may not necessarily demonstrate that a fluid
needs to be changed. Oils and fluids identified in this guide should be
changed at the specified interval or in conjunction with a repair. Flushing
is a viable way to change fluid for many vehicle sub-systems during
scheduled maintenance and should only be done using the same fluid
required to finish the maintenance procedure, or a Ford approved flushing chemical.

You can find all manuals on-line at the link below:

Click on "Owners Guides" on the menu on the left side of your screen and then call up the proper year and vehicle model.

I am not sure that it will work with a direct link or not, but if so, it will be at the link below:

You can then click on the Windows "Edit" function on the top menu bar and use the "Find" feature (enter the word "flush").

Bismic;

Thank you for all your effort. It is appreciated. Funny my truck is an 06 yet it has the 05 Supplement. Guess Ford needed to save a few bucks and get rid of the old printing.

I have 108,00 miles on mine and it has been flushed 3 times, still runs like new. I do replace the external filter at every flush as well. I only let my local Ford dealer do the flushes because I do not trust tranny shops at all.

So I take it if you have an 05 and a 2005 manual that you can change the 8 qts. in the pan and ext. filter and still be within warranty parameters. Do we have a concensus here?

Yup, I think it is clear.

Drain and replace .... or ... flush (using proper equipment and chemicals). Either is OK.

I guess my point is that the tranny's did not change from 2005 to 2006. Since the 2006 manual has the statement above in it, it is "backwards" compatible w/ older year models.

Anyone have the transmission service done at your local Ford dealer lately? What did it cost?

Thanks in advance.

It varies from $100 to $170 and this is for the flush and not the external filter change which they charge you extra for.

That is correct. I prefer to change my own filter when I get home from the flush. That way I know the new filter was not put on prior to the flush. I trust the dealer, just peace of mind.

Just got the truck back today. Dealer tranny flush was $150 total including tax. SA confirmed that external filter change was extra and not standard protocol to change it at each flush interval. I'm not familar with it's location or if this is a maint. item (ext tranny filter) at some point. Anyone know the scoop?

Look under the truck on the passanger side about 1 foot back from the front of the bumper. You will see a canister hanging down with a hex on the bottom of it. It's best to break it loose with a impact gun, but a quick jerk with a rachet will do also, you don't want to slowly twist it loose because you can bend the lines going into it. You will also see a spring in the canister when you take it down, remember how it went back. You can buy the filters from dieselfiltersonline.com

What about the popular DIY flush with the oulflow cooler line into a bucket and filling the trans with the bottles as it's running while not letting the fluid get low so the pump doesn't run dry? A diesel tech on a yahoo group knew how much the TS could be overfilled before dumping fluid overboard as to get a headstart since the trans pumps fluid faster than you can pour it down the tube. If there is infact a t-stat then this would only flush the converter maybe. Did this to my trans at 50k along with a new external filter. Is this better than just draining the pan and refilling? Any way to remove the t-stat for the flush then reinstall like a coolant flush or is it buried?

I change this filter every 10 to 15,000 miles instead of the recommended 30,000 for peace of mind. I know, I'm anal but 30 bucks is a lot cheaper than 4,000.

The thermostat is located inside the pump body. The trans has to come out of the truck and be partially disassembled to remove the thermostat.
