2005 F350 4x4 switch on dash no workie

any ideas on this?

on my 2005 F350, my 4x4 switch on the dash turns the 4x4 light on on the dash, but won't switch it into 4wd. I can hear it clunk, but it doesn't go into 4wd. I have to get out and manually turn the hubs to make it work.

Is this a fuse? a vacuum line? both?

help......

I was told that the same vacuum modulator for the 4x4 shift actuator is the same one that controls the heater blendor functions. My heater functions work fine though.????

Check to see if there is power to the fuse in the cab. If not it is the relay on the firewall.

If you have your heater on with either the dash vents or floor vents, and then turn on the 4x4 switch, does it stay the same, or does it change it to your defrost vents?

If it changes your air flow to defrost, then it's a leak or pump issue.

When hitting the 4x4 switch on the dash, while the heater is blowing, the air flow through the vents remains the same.

I had a leak at the hub bearings and the 4 wheel drive wouldn't engage, but my heat always work the way it should. I was told that leak was small enough to mess the 4wd but not enough to mess w/ the vents.

There are two o rings at each hub, ones a big yellow one on the back side inside the knuckle, and the other is a smaller black one on the locker side of the hub. I think one of these are leaking.

I traced all the vacuum lines and checked all the fuses, they all are good. I can hear the transfer case kicking in and out, but still nothing.

Have I mentioned I hate my 2005?

Use a smoke machine, like the one used for EVAP testings on gas cars, it's what we used on my truck and was very effective.

Manually turn the hubs to make it work? So it works then? What happens if you leave the hubs in Lock position? Can you take the 4x4 in and out by using the switch?

yes I can take it in and out, while using the switch, if the hubs are manually locked in. If the hubs are set to AUTO, the switch will not lock the hubs in.

Do you know anybody w/ an 05 to swap out the hublocks themselves? It really sounds like a vac. problem.I had a hard time finding my leak. That's why we went to the smoke machine. If they lock in and out no problem w/ the hublocks locked, but not in auto it's gotta be leaking somewhere.

Hi I have a 2004 F350 Lariat and that is what you have to do with these years, is actually lock the hubs on and then turn it on inside the truck on the dash. The Ford dealer here told me just to leave my hubs locked after the first snow fall and just use my switch then unlock them in the Spring.

Hmmm - wouldn't that mean your front wheels and axle are engaged all the time then? What will that do to your mileage? or the front transfer case gears?
