Went to the cities today it was -15 outside when we left got half way there about 100 miles and my heater would start to kick in and out. cold warm cold warm, when we would go up a hill for a few miles it would kick out and blow freezing cold air , temp was fine so i stop at a truck stop and checked the coolant, all was on the marks with coolant but there was some leaking and splattering around the cap. when i would stop the truck at idle it would also kick out.You could rev it up and it would bow warmer air it was never very hot. Now to me this usually ment low coolant but the bottle says its at the min. and ok mark. any ideas before i take it in thanks in advance guys. ohh and when i would can it it would kick out also at 70 mph and you could here a noise under the hood

Mine does the same thing. I was wondering if when the thermostat closes, if it also stops water flow through the heater core as well? My truck won't blow heat when the engine is warm and idling. I must be driving to get any heat whatsoever.
Does your temp gauge drop at all when your heat output drops? I am wondering if your thermostat is starting to act up. For some reason I have had to have the thermostat replaced twice in 50,000 K.

Is the heat control (hot/cold knob) controled by vaccum? I know the vent control is. It could possibly be a vaccum leak if it is controlled by vaccum. Also feel your heater core hoses. Are they warm? If so then the problem is in the core or cab.
Mine used to do the same thing. My process of work was, Check heater conrol valve, rmove heater control valve, add cardboard to front of rad. flush the radiator, moddify egr to elimate flash boiling.
Finally put in new head gaskets and studs, works perfectly now.

I'm certain AutoJim will chime in here, but until he does, here's a bit of clarification on some of the above points.
When the thermostat closes, it doesn't restrict flow through the heater core.
The temperature control on the dash is not vacuum controlled. It is an electronic servo much like on a remote control car. However, the air distribution control is vacuum controlled, like someone else stated.
Covering the radiator isn't necessary on this vehicle. The thermostat system is capable of maintaining appropriate engine temperature in a very wide range of ambient temperatures. Covering the radiator to improve performance isn't addressing the root cause of the problem. In addition, covering the radiator will restrict airflow to the rest of the coolers in the stack - the intercooler, transmission OTA cooler, etc. This could cause signifigant damage.
As for modifying the EGR system to stop flash boiling, I wouldn't recommend it. This system is designed to operate properly when all the pieces are in place. If you change coolant flow at the EGR cooler, this could lead to unpredictable results. If you elect to reduce flash boiling by reducing or eliminating EGR flow, then you are no longer emissions compliant, and you are removing a heat source from the coolant that the system expects.
In other words, find and fix the problem. Don't re-engineer the system to mask an existing problem.
Im wondering if it could have to due to something with the cap because it seems to be leaking. would loosing pressur due this. Yes the carboard did nothing. I nevr had a single issue with it last year. where is the heater control valve located?

I went to my dealer today. The truck is going in tomorrow. I agree with you Greg, find and fix the problem. I did the cardboard thing because it has been below zero here, and I wanted to find out if the engine simply wasn't heating up enough, or not. I am thinking my problems have something to do with the EGR cooler. After my engine warmed up this morning, I felt the hoses to my heater core, and they were barely warm. I will know at the end of the day tomorrow. I will let you guys know what the dealer found.
