I am thinking of getting 06 F350 4wd and notice they give the option of two axle ratios, which one is the better way to go? I pull a 32' 5th wheel now (gmc 2500hd gas 8.1 with 4.10 ratio). Would it be diff in the diesel.
Mine has the 3.73 and does a fine job pulling my LQ horse trailer. Not sure on the weight of my trailer but it's 35' overall length and the GVWR plate on it says 18K. I don't think it's anywhere near that heavy though; that would put me close to or just over 26K GCWR My "guestimate" weight with two horses in it (that's all we normally take) is somewhere around 14K. It has upgraded axles and tires on it. Similar trailers to it didn't have GVWRs that high. I really need to weigh the outfit at some point to take all the guessing out of it.
Overall, though, I have often thought that having the 4.10s would make it even better.

my X has 3.73's and my CVW(loaded with junk/no water) is 19,750#'s...i don't have any problems pulling up the hills with my rig, but it's getting close..when i'm loaded with water and all(which adds 1K #'s +), i can really feel it(it will slow to 60mph up Baker grade)...
if you're rig is heavier than mine, and you plan on towing through the NV/UT/CA mountains i would go for the 4.10's if you can..
either way, these trucks can tow...i can make it to SLC with the trailer in 6 hours or down to O.C.,CA in a hair over 4...have fun...
I pull a horse trailer quite abit and also a 32 foot flat bed.I have the 3.73 and sure wish I had the 4.10 around here it is pretty hilly and seems you can run 5 gear real good but get into 6th and seems like you have to down shift alot. But out on the interstate it sure runs good in 6th. It seems to me that if you can keep you rpms around the 2000 and higher it pulls great but drop below that and you are looking for a diffrent gear.just my 2cents. Jim

When I ordered my 05 I went with the 4.10's for pulling 12.5k +. I now shift a whole lot less then I did with my 3.73 truck.
Fuel mileage is pretty good running empty if you keep the speed down. 4th of July weekend I drove 640 miles between fills and still had 3 plus gallons in the tank.

I recall looking on Edmunds and the 20" wheels are not available with the camper or heavy suspension package or was it the other way around? Either way tells me that they can't cut the mustard for heavy loads!
These trucks are meant to haul and if you want a show truck then the F-150 might be a better option.
I am considering a DRW mainly to get my rear end lower like the F-250 and be more stable when pulling 5th wheel. My SRW did a fine job with my current unit but I may go with a high profile 5ver next time. I imagine the 4.10 would help a lot. My only reservation is lower fuel economy with the 4.10. I wonder how much.

Nope I got the camper Pkg. Oh and just so you know, My truck is NOT a show truck, it Hauls my 10K trailer anywhere I want it just fine.
The only towing problem was at Hwy speed (70 MPH), cause of the larger wheels/tires (34.1" vs 33")that Ford put on and did not take into consideration it changing the ratio, it is running at a lower RPM than it would if they were stock.

I think it would depend on your driving. I had a '97 with 4:10s and got a consistant 18-19 mpg. My driving was backroads and two lane highways. It had a 5 speed and I drove mixed, like a granny, and like I stole it. When I hit the interstate, my mileage dropped to around 16, because of the higher rmps I would guess. Towing, I would think the all around mileage would be a bit better. Just my 3 cents.
