6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

I have a 2003 6.0 with 43000 miles on it. How many mile will a stock air filter last. On my filter the filter minder has not moved at all yet and the manual says no miles for time to change the filter just to keep checking the filter minder. I ask this because I am not shure if the filter minder is working because it has not moved yet.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

I have 45k on my 04 and it has never moved, I was told by a ford service tech that because of so much volume the filter is there has to be alot of dirt in it to make it move. But anyways I replaced mine at 38k, I don't drive much on dirt roads, mostly highway.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

I just could not take it anymore and just changed mine this weekend. 43,200 miles (2,700 gallons of fuel ..assuming 16 MPG .. thousands of cubic feet of air) on a 2005 6.0 PS; Damn plastic thing-a-ma-jig has never moved ... I "hear" that the minder goes from "OK" to "Change" in a very quick time frame; good one day, bad the next.

I think the Donaldson technology is very sound and will not require changing for "many miles" when complared to the BAU pleated type. BUT ... I also belevie the long life of a diesel is very dependant on adequate clean air and clean fuel, and starving them of either could prove to be a disaster. Diesels require tons of air, so I chose to throw my money away and change it without the minder telling me to.

Like when she's washed, it makes no sense, but she runs better !!

I as most folks, follow the recommended 15K "change the fuel filters" so based on that, I thought a 3 to 1 ratio for the air filter was all I was willing to risk.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

Your stock filter will hold 1600 grams of dirt before it fills up. Many, many miles on non-dusty roads.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

I think it all depends on your driving conditions. The more debris, dirt and dust it sucks in the quicker its going to clog and move the filter minder. I suspect that by the time the filter minder moves, you will already be losing performance. I drive a lot of dirty/dusty roads, so I pull mine a couple of times a year and check it. The last time I pulled it a couple months ago at 38K it looked pretty filthy and I wrapped a pile of dirt out of it on the bench. I decided to change it since I had a spare.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

Changed mine at 50,000 miles...absolutely wasted the $65 for a new Donaldson Power Core (white media) and may even be tempted to put the old one back in....I don't drive in dusty conditions and I suspect it had maybe 8 oz of dirt.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

77K and holding, I've ran some 100K and they all seem to plug up after that.

The put the filter minder on for a reason. Changing a filter lets a small amount of dirt into the engine, so changing it too often is worse on your engine.

But hey it's your money

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

Does anybody know the actual weight of a NEW Powercore OEM Blue media filter. Just curious, as the determining factor seems to be how much weight in debris it will hold.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

This may be a simple question, but when checking the filter minder I assume you just look at it with the truck idling? I used to have a Ford Focus commuter car and the minder never moved on that thing either.

Re: 6.0 How many miles does the stock air filter last.

Due to our hi desert conditions was curious..installed new (blue) @ 17500 mi..little dusty/tapping, small amount fell out. Screen between grill/intake caught those big ones. Put new one in to compare, no diff. in performance/mpg etc. Kept old for spare & want hesitate to reuse.

New 3# 14 1/2oz...old (orig) 3# 15oz. Was surprised on wt. FWIW..filter minder didnt move.
