6.0 Idling Problems

My dad has a 2004 F-450 6.0 powestroke. And after he drives it about 10 or 15 miles. After the motor gets warm he stops at a stop light or gets behind somebody. The motor idles up and down and one time it actaully shut off on him and he had to get it towed home. After he got it home it fired right back up again after the motor cooled down.He changed the fuel filters and oil filters and oil in the truck. And when the engine idles up and down and when it balgs down or idles down he hits the throttle and it is like nothing is there when he hits the throttle while it idles down. After he changed the oil and the filters. It want shut off on him but it still idles up and down on him when the truck stops at stop lights and stop signs. There are no lights that comes on when it does the idling to show a problem. The truck only has 30,000 miles on it and it has never done this before.Does anybody ever heard of this problem before. If anybody can help I appreciate it.Thanks Dave

He needs to get it on a good scan tool and monitor ICP to see if that is fluctuating..

Mine started doing this too. It had the P2285 code. Low voltage ICP. In the shop now. It would idle up to over 1000 RPMs.

Most likely was ICP, and/or a leak in the HPOP system somewhere. Usually a cracked O-ring. When the oil gets hot, a cracked o-ring will not allow one to hold the proper pressure for smooth idle and/or hot starts...
