Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

I would be looking for a wire chaffing issue off the FICM where the harness exits the FICM and runs across the valve cover. I seem to remember that there was a recall on certain 04s for this issue. My 04 did not fall into the date range for the recall, even though I found it chaffing, so I fixed the issue myself with plastic conduit.

My 03 has been doing that since new. I've almost rearended people in the drive thru. Mine has been to the dealer to many times to count and they finaly told me it was normal and had no fix for it. The mechanic said hold the brake pedal harder.Good luck with yours and let me know if you here of a fix?

You need to find a dealer that doesn't provide crack to the diesel tech!!

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

I would not put up with that. I would either make them (Ford) replace the engine wiring harness and attempt to fix the problem or replace the truck.

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

I have the same problem.

The following fixes have failed to correct the problem:

1. ICP sensor replaced twice
2. EGR valve replaced once
3. EBP sensor replaced once
4. Wire harness (chafing) replaced

The ICP sensor seems to be the first thing that the shop and tech line always try to replace. The surging idle on my truck went away for several months, but it has returned although a little milder. I've had several instances where I almost rear ended someone at the light. Surged to 750 RPM and went dead silent back to 500 RPM, before returning to factory idle at 600 RPM.

Good luck. Update the post if you find a solution.

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

not to take away from your issue at hand but.... come awwn you almost rearend people... are you sitting ONE inch from there bumper? do you sit with your foot OFF the brake? i mean with a little pressure on the brake and a 4oo rpm "surge" she still dont move much...

sometimes i really wonder. you got guys almost getting killed due to the lag of the turbo, and other guys almost rearending vehicle due to the truck "surgeing"

sure mine has alot of lag when cold... i drive accordingly, and yep she surges too but not going to rearend anyone from it...

heck my brothers turbo subaru wrx surges too its normal in those cars...

i can see you not wanting it to surge, but be realistic you arent gonna crash due to it.

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

mine is doing the same thing, i thought it was my powerpup as my dealership hasnt been able to get it to do it but now im wondering. ive had mine all the way up to 1100 and down to 300. its been at my dealer since november 10 or so, i told them im not taking it back till its fixed. i went on vacation and i go home on friday so trust me i will be driving it all day long until it acts up and then i will leave it running with them and i will get an answer asap. ill keep you posted, as for the wire chafing i asked about it and they said they didnt find anything. i told them to replace the egr (they like me and dont mind listening ). and i had hte ebp done a lil bit ago but i dont think its that. my problem doesnt always happen though, you? it seems like no matter what though if it idles long enough it will sooner or later. let me know whats going on with you, the more info the more i can tell them and maybe get this done sooner for all of us. good luck
Jeremy

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

What he said. My truck used to do the exact same thing. The dealer did replace a few parts, but the final EGR/ICP/reflash solved everything.

Never has done it since.

Re: 6.0 L 2004 superduty AT IDLE SURGING

It actually sounds like your torque converter is locking up. I had this problem after having my tranny rebuilt, small piece of waste got in the switches. Good luck.
