6.0 Oil Capacity???

I have an 05 6.0. The owners handbook says the engine oil cap. is 15 qts with a filter change. This puts the level high on the dipstick. I've read on other sites people are using only 14qts. Is 15qts a misprint in the handbook, or is this an accuracy issue with the dipstick?

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

If you follow the right procedure, open and drain your filter first, you should get 15 in it. I have mine since new.

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

I open and drain my filter first and 14 qts puts me right at the top of the hash marks.

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

I check it after it sits all night, so all of the oil should be drained down. 14 qts looks good on the dipstick for me.

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

I also put in 14qts. I hate that friggin' dipstick. It has to be about the hardest stick I have ever tried to read. How come Honda and Toyota can have simple flat blade sticks that are very easy to read and my $45k truck has a plastic bulb on the end of the stick? By the time you yank the whole length out, it has picked up every drop of oil clinging to the sides of the stick. About the only way I can get an accurate reading is first thing in the morning after the truck sat all night. Love the truck and the PSD, hate that damn dipstick.
14qts of fresh Rotella sure smooths out the idle.

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

Engine holds 15 QTS, however, the high preasure oil pump res holds .82 QT of this amount and it does NOT drain back into the oil pan. 14 QTS should be about right.

RoyC

I looked this back up in the 6.0L Bible and I was in error on the amount it is actually .95 QT see page 21 of Bible.

My Bad!

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

what he said + Mine new smoked a light blue smoke and all of the sudden when i changed to 14 qts. it stoped, o by the way i had to clean my egr at 7k miles a result i attribute to overfilling my oil and driving it way to easy...just my 2 cents..

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

Well, I've done it.

It took me about 31.5 quarts until it started coming out the hole where you fill it.

So...the total capacity is 31.5 quarts.

It wouldn't turn over when I tried to start it, though

Re: 6.0 Oil Capacity???

Why doesnt the dumb sh^&'s @ Ford tell the dealers this? It the oil pump res holds .82 which makes sense to me why dont they at the dealership put 14 in? I would like to know if the folks at Ford tech services know this and why it is not public. I have replaced a couple EGR valves myself. Is there any adverse effect to the engine with 15 in it. I would think that the engine tolerances are able to allow for this.
