ok guys im new to the diesel engine so any help would be nice. i have an 05 f-250 that leaks antifreeze. it drips from the back of the engine. so i did some research on this forum and found that the egr cooler hose is a common leak on this motor. if that aint what it is what else could it be? but ive got another question. my reservior cap was leaking and i replaced it but it still leaks??? so any help would be nice! thanks.
I just got my '04 4X4 F250 w/ 69k out of the shop after having the same issues. Turned out that the Oil Cooler was clogged, restricting the flow of coolant and backing up in to the degas bottle. They ended up replacing the oil cooler and even though they said the EGR Cooler was alright I had that replaced as well with an aftermarket one. In addition, they flushed the system, changed the oil and pulled the turbo for cleaning. Now it was runs like a champ. If that turns out to be the problem I hope you're still under warranty.

If it were not for the last sentence, I would say the EGR cooler hose was the most likely problem and it still may be the reason you have coolant at the back of the engine but maybe not...
"Leaking" from the degas bottle (overflow bottle) is an indication of too much pressure in the cooling system. Without proper diagnosis, it is a shot in the dark as to the cause but the usual suspects are the EGR cooler, oil cooler, viscous fan clutch and headgaskets. If you do a search for "puking" in this forum, you will find enough reading material to educate yourself on each of these possible causes..
A bad EGR cooler could cause a leak, so could bad headgaskets.. So, you really need to get this properly diagnosed.....

ok guys took some parts off my truck. the degas bottle has a brown residue all in the tank. could it be oil? and took the intercooler pipe that runs off the turbo and found in the bottom of the pipe right before it goes into the intercooler it has an oil deposit bout the size of a quarter in the bottom??? could it be a bad head gasket? plz help me out on this guys. thanks
Red..look on main page at top "6L FAQ" Egr hose repair. Most popular opinion about gunk in degas is casting sand. Hopefully its not oil. System is closed so oil vapors collect inside CAC tubes & is normal (lousey design)

No, that isn't oil. It's normal and is the gunk that used to be in your coolant passages. Some of that same stuff is likely clogging your oil cooler too and a blocked oil cooler is one of the things that leads to puking.. If you don't have one, when you get your truck properly diagnosed and repaired, add a coolant filter to your truck now to help get rid of the gunk in your cooling system.

No, that oil is not from the headgaskets, it is from the crankcase vent system (CCV). You can do the CCV mod (search for it) and stop that from happening but what you are seeing is also normal.

Incidentally, if you have a leaking oil cooler, you cannot diagnose headgaskets till the oil cooler has been replaced and if you replace the oil cooler you might as well do the EGR cooler while you are there. It will save a 2nd trip.
