6.0 Rough First Start and idle without any Power

This is my first diesel and Thank you for having me.

I just bought a 2004 with the 6.0 L and have a couple of questions. I test drove it in the afternoon and it ran great, almost can't feel it idle with more power than I could shake a stick at.

Well, the next morning I started it, after waiting for the glow plug, and it sounded like !$%Q@$%. I let it idle for a minute and then crawled through our neighborhood. I think I would have had more power on my bicycle. It idled high, would not shift and I had a hard time getting over 10 mph. After a few minutes it got better but took probably 10 minutes to feel the way it did when I test drove it.

This weekend changed the oil, filter, fuel filters, air filter. Also noticed a strong exhaust smell behind the turbo. Maybe a minor improvement this morning

I spoke with with a Ford Diesel mechanic this morning and he recommended that I remove the butterfly inside the throttle, but leave it all connected electronically. He believed that one of the flash updates actually deactives it. He was quite certain that by removing the butterfly it would help with the rough, no power upon the first start in the morning.

Now for the exhaust smell in the engine compartment, back behind the turbo. These fumes also enter the cabin while sitting at a light. After speaking with him, he told me that 60 to 1 it is the Y pipe, which I am going to switch out this Saturday.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Am I over ananlysing this and should not worry about it.

Thank you very much
Martin

well im not sure if the 6.0s have a ebpv or not, but, the 7.3s do.they help warm up the engine, during this the truck will feel like it doesnt want to move, really sluggish.(ebpv=exhaust back pressure valve)

They don't. They have an exhaust backpressure sensor but no valve.

Some early 2003.25 power stroke engines have the throttle plate (EGRTP), some, not all. I have an early 2003 and it did not have the thorttle plate.

Page 38: Air Management System

Yours may or may not have one, but it's easy to check. The EGRTP was deleted in the 2005 MY.

2005 Update Page 06 Exhaust Up pipe Scoop-Intake Manifold Divider Plates-EGR Throttle Plate

My want to check out the high pressure oil pump or ICP sensor. A weak/leaking pump can cause cold start/running issues.

I will check that tonight. Do you think that, if I do have it, removing it will help with some of the morning issues?

I would think letting it warm up for a little while before driving it in the mornings would help...

Ford has an updated heating strategy that solves this problem. Also yo could have an injector going bad or bad.

Ya, for some reason it sounds like some type of sensor or injector. You might have to have a diesel mechanic do a diagnosis for you sometime because the last thing you want to do it let the truck warm up for 30 mins every morning just so it runs normal.

Took it to Don Davis today, they were great!!!!Eddie reflashed and checked everything, all looks good. He believes that the new flash should take care of it along with my removing the butterfly from the throttle. Will update in the morning.

the rough start up could be your FICM (fuel injection control module) the exhaust smell is probably cracked bellows on the y pipe to the turbo.

Eddie at Don Davis in Arlington tested all injectors and the FCIM for me as well. Hopefully the flash will take care of this. He also agreed that the bellows are probably cracked. I am planning to replace the Y pipe this weekend.

WOW, what a difference, starts right up, idles smooth and had much better power in the morning. Shifting was also much better. It is amazing what software can do.

Cold Starting

Seems that I have a similar problem, except, when mine actually starts, the power isn't bad, but I do have to let it run for about 5 mintues to get the "clacking" to go away.

I just recently started having problems starting my 6.0 in my Excursion. The engine seems to be cold (outside air a balmy 41 degrees). If I wait for the pre-heater light to go away, crank it, maybe one or no cylinders fire and kick over. I turn off the ignition and try again, it turns over a little more, until after about 10 times it actually starts (and sounds really bad, as in in a noisy cold engine).

After warming up, no problem starting through out the day. Could it be that my pre-heater is out? How hard is that to change?

Other possible problems? Car has been virtually maintenance free and has only a measly 98k on it.

Any ideas would be appreciated, as I am a diesel novice.
