Lastly...
I've been looking at search results that come up via powerstroke.org...
For you engineers out there (or others), will/can the "diminished" ficm cause problems downstream to the injectors?
More specifically, should I bench my truck in the driveway until I fix the ficm? Or am I okay to drive it in the meantime? I'm hesitant, given the violent protesting (not to mention the black smoke) it exudes during start-up.
I have read that some Techs believe it can cause issues with injectors. I have seen no TSB or training literature from Ford that supports this, but I wouldn't risk it unless you just have to drive it.
I have used Ed at FICMrepair.com. His prices are VERY reasonable and he does very good work. SWAMPS is good also, just higher priced. I have heard the same about CircuitBoardMedics (being good also - not sure about the pricing).
Went with ficmrepair.com
Ed was super helpful. He's taking the month off, from what it sounds like, but still managed to send me a rebuilt unit same-day. Put it in this morning, and the truck runs like a champ!
Also upgraded the fuel regulator spring and replaced the fuel filters while I had it apart.
Got a scan gauge ii like you guys recommended. I'll try that out today.
Thanks to all who responded, made my life a lot easier!
Your egr cooler might not be leaking itself but the little coolant hose used to connecting it. It has a quick connect style connector with a o-ring on one side. This was where mine was leaking.

Hey! Did your check engin light come on during any of this? I'm having a lot of the same issues but the check engin light is on as well. Mine is a 2007 6.0 motor.

Just had my FICM replaced on Friday same conditions were happening in addition, mine would idle with no response from the pedal when I pushed down, then suddenly I would have pedal and it would drive fine. For a while.

No, I never had a light come on.
It's really quick to do the simple voltage test. All you need to do is pull the coolant reservoir out of the way with to 8mm bolts, pull the cap off the ficm (torx t-20 if I remember), and do the quick test with engine off and on.
*Clear warnings all over the place not to touch the voltmeter to the side when testing, it's like playing operation.*
My voltage was ~ 1/2 what it should have been, no check engine light.
Also, I picked up a scan gauge ii from Amazon for about 150 shipped. I have yet to find a code, but that might help you identify any other issues you might be having that trips the engine light.
Here it is winter time again, cold starts inevitable. I have an '07, 250 diesel, mornings are spent coaxing the 6.0 to life. I also like Hess77 am intrigued by the injector buzz. Some mornings i hear it other times I don't, hence hard starts. I thought it was glow plugs so Changed Glow plug relay with no improvement. Now have new fuel pump and ready to install but don't know if this is the fix either. Have read a lot of references to the FICM but videos do not duplicate my problems. Speeds above 70 mph truck seems to miss or cough black smoke. These symptoms do not appear in warmer weather. oil filters, air filters and fuel filters done regularly. Rotella T 15w40 used all year. Have had multiple issues with water in fuel treated with Diesel 911 and filter changes. Truck has 150,000. Any help?
This sounds alot like the probs my friend is having with his truck.
He complains of his truck starting hard and running rough in the morning. But when is warms up he says in runs good the rest of the day.
So could this be his FICM going bad. He's already had it replaced once about a year ago.
If anyone has a tech in the Tampa area he'd appreciate it.He doesn't work on his stuff so he'll need alittle help getting his truck fixed up.
stiction. run some Hot Shots secret in the motor oil...... Did the FICM already....
