6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

The guy I help out (Hog and grain farmer) has an 05 F350 6.0 that surges(That is what he is saying) when he is pulling a heavy load. He says it bucks like, the truck will increase in speed and then drop off in spead. I tried to search it but came up with no luck. What could be the problem. To note, he has already had the turbo replaced and the piston pump on the fuel pump replaced, because it was rusty. He loves the truck and uses it everyday, but is just concerned if it is something else. Any help is appreciated. I told him it may be the turbo, but I haven't driven it.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

If he's not running a 5W40 synthetic oil, thats what I'd suspect is the cause.

Get 14qt of 5W40 syn in it & see what that does.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

sounds like the egr could be sticking and doing that, mine has done it twice and they hve had to replace it two times as the cleaning did not do the trick. I would notice mine as I would put under a load like up a grade and go about half to 3.4 throttle, not down shifting, just a little more foot it would buck and snort and i of course out of reaction let my foot off the pedal, if I kept my foot there it would keep surging, and puffs of black smoke would go out the exhaust. My dads was doing similiar stuff but without the black smoke and his just turned out to be fuel filters.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

I have exact same problem. Very scary when it happens. Kudos to you for trying to solve it. 2 Dealerships and about 5 visits, and nothing.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

I've had a surging issue when towing a my 10K , 2K tongue wt aluminum gooseneck w/ my 2005 2WD 6.0 F-250 9800GVWR 33K miles. I've noticed it at 55-65 on bumpy roads and less than 45-mainly when braking on bumpy or smooth pavement. Some call it highway hop or porpoising, but I call it a pain!@. Been to 2 local dealerships and the trailer shop twice. Dealers reprogrammed transmission and injectors, trailer shop reset brakes and now believes the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller is probably faulty. Just had the 30K service, transmission flushed and filters changed. Traveling with the trailer to the original dealership on Friday. Let us know if you find out anything-I will inform if I solve my problem.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

Hey all, replaced both fuel filters and that solved it. Simple... We just hauled a load of hay (18 big squares) with it on the flatbed. Worked like a champ. He loves this truck, so don't get me wrong. I am just pleased that it was this simple. He did not change the oil. He will put the 5w40 in for the next oil change. This is his hay truck where as the his 7.3 2002 f350 is his stock trailer truck.

Re: 6.0 SURGE ISSUE?

I also have a surge problem!!! But mine is in the Tranny, had it serviced at 50,000 now have 72. It only seems to do it when driving around town, (Upshifting to 3rd gear),Does not do it every time. does not thrw a code, Never does it while under heavy acceleration (highway on ramp etc). I have changed all filters within the last 200 miles. when i had the tranny serviced the dealership did not replace the filters. apparently ford says to flush the system. i picked up the filters today from ford, only to find out i have to go back because the MERCON SP is also a dealer only item. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
