6.0L Powetroke Wont Start

I have a 2003 F-350 6.0L Powerstroke that has never really given me any problems at all. The majority of the time it will start but recently ever once in a while it wont. Now if it wont start for me i leave it sit over night and then it will start fine in the morning. It really has me baffled! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

As far as i know they are good. They havent given me any trouble up to this point unless they are going bad. But i still dont understand why it would start some of the time and then some times it wouldnt. What would letting it sit overnight do that would make it start right up the next day as if nothing was even wrong?

Do a search on 'won't start' or 'no start' and behold the plethera of info that appears. I would bet you have an issue to do with oil. Hi pressure oil pump, Internal pressure regulator fittings fubar that haven't been updated as per Ford etc...Do a search and you'll see that you are not alone with this problem. Make arrangements for other transportation till Friday if you have a Ford Dealer that knows what they're doing.

I have had my hi pressure oil pump replaced not that long ago. Is it a possiblity that it went bad that quickly? It probably hasnt even been half a year since it was replaced. I really would hate to buy another one..... It was really expensive!

My money is the oil pressure sensor. Is your no start issue after it's been running? Commin headace see earlier post. The vehicle needs something like 400 psi of oil pressure to start, but the sensor faults and will not allow the engine to fire. If you scan the computer, you would find excecss cranking code.

Red,

Welcome to TDS.

It would be good if you could use the search feature for about the last 3months. Look for head gaskets, puking, & antifreeze. If you don't find anything (but you will) try a new post, so you don't hi-jack this one.

It's also a good thing to add your vehicle and any/all mods done to it to your signature line so we don't have to ask more questions to help you out.

So - do you have any indication of coolant puking out of the degas bottle? How's the level in it? Any white smoke?

High pressure oil leak my friend. Odds are you arent seeing any oil on the driveway either.....or just tiny drops if you go check.

The truck gets to a certain temp, and the pressure leak causes it to not start while hot. Let is sit for a few hours and it starts? Definately a high pressure oil leak.

It will not code with a high pressure oil leak. My money is on that and not the sensor, as stated in my post above.

Yes my problem does seem to be after it has been running for a long period of time. Like if it is just short distances and not run that much or hard it seems to be fine but if its a long distance it is then that i have the problem. Thats what it seems like to me anyways.

Dirty,

like Strokin said, high pressure oil leak. The fittings inside the engine have probably come loose. If you search on HPOP issues you should find something about this.

One thing you can test is your batterys with a load tester one at a time to see if one or both are holding a charge or not. Mine was slow starting and some time would not start after replacing both batterys and alternator it starts right up. over time you can't hear or notice the starter spinning slower and slower.

No. The HPOP is what is used to provide "hydraulic" pressure to the injectors. W/out it, there's nothing to open them.
