Re: is the 6.4 a bolt-on replacement

I don't know, but if you are even considering it, you must be a glutton for punishment.

I think the engine compartment had to be re-designed some, but I'm not sure.

Re: is the 6.4 a bolt-on replacement

I'll take a long shot and say no.

You should post this in the 6.4 Forum though, I think.

You will need to lift your current truck on a hoist at a Ford dealer then drive a new 2008 away!

Re: is the 6.4 a bolt-on replacement

In the context of the "Monster Garage" show, YES.
In the context of getting a 6.4 long block and swapping all the 6.0 stuff over and it being simple. NO

[/ QUOTE ]

No. Aside from a different block, crank, reciprocating assembly, cam, heads, valves, fuel system, lube system, cooling system, turbocharger setup, emissions-related parts (EGR, aftertreatment), exhaust system, air intake system, charge air cooler, radiator, fan, belts, hoses, ducts, accessories, electronic controls, wiring harnesses, and vehicle front body structure, the bank angle, bore centers, and some fasteners are common between the two.

Given enough time and money, anything is possible, of course, but by the time you complete all the custom fab work and adaptation, you probably could've just bought an '08 with the 6.4L in it already.

Now... all THAT said, I suspect it's only a matter of time before someone swaps in a 6.4L short block assembly under a set of later "commonized" 6.0L heads, figures out a way to mount & drive an HPOP in place of the HP fuel pump, and has a "poked and stroked" 6.0L now displacing an extra 0.4L... but that will be further complicated by things like a (most likely) different bolt pattern and sealing scheme for the front cover on the 6.4L that will prevent mounting the 6.0L's front cover assembly, a different lube oil pump between the two (because both the crank and the block are different), different direct-mount accessory boss locations, and the like. It's not impossible. Just very difficult.

Re: is the 6.4 a bolt-on replacement

I noticed FORD is advertising a " bigger Superduty " and I am wondering if that is related to the 6.4 L requiring a different( larger ? ) frame to mount on !

Re: is the 6.4 a bolt-on replacement

...or that they are finally offering the F450 in pickup trim from the factory. (What most people consider "a Superduty" even though the cab and chassis technically are also.)
