Accelerator pedal

My sister in laws 2004 Excursion diesel has a floppy accelerator pedal. The pivot pin that is a press fit through the pedal rod is loose and slid out from its proper place allowing the pedal to flop around. One of the pedal pin holes is all mangled up.

I called my dealer parts man about this problem and he says they have seen this problem before. He states that the plastic pedal itself is not available and that they sell the pedal assembly which supposedly includes the accelerator pedal sensor.

If I replace the accelerator pedal assembly including the sensor is there an accelerator pedal sensor relearn procedure that must be performed prior to driving the vehicle or will the PCM automatically calibrate itself with the new sensor while the vehicle is being driven?

Re: Accelerator pedal

Why not let a deaeler take care of it since it should be a warranty issue? It certainly seems to be a safty issue and if it'a common, that would concern Ford and would need to be captured for investigation and future action if warranted.

FYI, I have an '04 and don't have any problem with the peddle.......at least I don't think so.

Re: Accelerator pedal

I am having the same problem. My dealer won't replace under warranty, he said Ford wouldn't pay for the whole pedal just because the pin has come out. I had thought about putting some type of glue on it just to keep the pin in place and still allow the pedal to pivot.

Re: Accelerator pedal

As mentioned should be covered under 3/36. Same for RSJ.
If dealer cant/want fix, as last resort report to NHTSA. JMO! I know going to dealer can be a PIA.

Good Q.,is new pedal assembly plug/play.

BTW...adding, seems a safety issue. JMO!

Re: Accelerator pedal

I'll second that! Find another dealer. I would not even question the failure and replace the assembly which, incidentally, is the only way they come. As far as calibrating or relearning... no, it doesn't work like that.

Re: Accelerator pedal

The vehicle is out of basic 3/36 warranty by mileage. In fact so is my truck.

Anyway, if I could just find a good pedal then I will replace it and locktite the pin into its hole and be done with it.

I will mention to take the vehicle to her dealer and see what they can do for her but I'm not holding my breath.

No one has yet, if I'm reading correctly, stated how to relearn the accelerator pedal to the PCM. Do I just disconnect the batteries or do I need a scan tool with the proper software to perform a relearn??

Re: Accelerator pedal

Have you thought about using something like JB Weld.

You might go to a hardware store and get some Oatey epoxy putty . It would be in the plumbing section. I keep some at the casa for repairs and that stuff will stick most anything except the plastics that look and feel like Tupperware. Both can be sanded and drilled. The putty can be semi shaped when putting it on - if you work fast. Just clean the area with alcohol good.

You can also check out your local salvage yards to.

Good luck - - Ed

As far as calibrating or relearning... no, it doesn't work like that. Just plug it in and that is all you need to do. As with all PCM inputs and outputs there is no set up or needed relearn process. The PCM will automatically adjust for normal differences in hardware as it does every single time you drive the truck. It's an ongoing process. The only thing that would require action would be if there was a fault with the sensor and a code had been set. You would then want to clear the code and run a self test to verify that the fault has been corrected.

Better?

Re: Accelerator pedal

Bravo, nicely put, I also have a question for you Ford Doc. Being an engine control device is the throttle pedal covered by the 5yr/100k engine warranty?
Thanx, Tim
