My friend has a '04 250 with 18,000, intake, exhaust and EDGE box on it. We had noticed previously that his truck was louder than other similar vehicles. This last week the truck started running rough and blowing some blue smoke. He had also mentioned to me he found water in the oil. The next day it started running very rough, then sputtering. He shut it down, grabbed a trailer and hauled it to the dealer. Upon arrival he started it and drove it off the trailer and parked it. When a tech started it later to pull in in the bay, the motor seized.
They brought in a Ford guy and when he saw the plugged bung for the EGT sensor, he voided the warranty on the motor and refused to look further to see what failed.
This guy is no hotrodder, and never turned it up past level 3.
Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like he's going to be out $15k or so for a new engine.

No diesel at the moment due to lack of funds (thanks Ford/SLTS).
Re: I have never owned Ford, but I would be pretty upset if they refused to
On modified engines when it specifically says so in the owner's manual......yes.......

Diesel supplement says something to the tune of "an aftermarket chip/program will void engine warantee." I would venture to say he's SOL and jump on the $7K replacement while you can.

Is it common practice for service to deny warranty work?

Only when the vehicle is modified in a way that causes the failure. Such as, an EDGE module.
Some cheaper repairs may slip by unnoticed, but an engine repair or replacement will be scrutinized every time.

Only in a court of law. Which will cost your buddy more then the new engine. They can do almost what ever they want. On the other hand he should fight it but must know when to cut bait.
Re: I have never owned Ford, but I would be pretty upset if they refused to
Why people would chip such a problem engine is beyond me.
Get an attorney, Ford will probably offer some sort of deal. Just tell them to prove it was chipped. Some dopey rep. is no expert.

Too extensive to list.
Days in shop so far 71 and counting as they still have it.
34K miles.
After spending a month in the shop and having it back only 2 weeks, it's back in the shop. Ford Customer service refused to send me a DSB Package. Told me the info is in the back of manual. Well truck is in shop and I don't have the info can you give it to me? No, it's in the manual.

It makes no difference that THEY actually seized the motor? It had no box on it when it seized.

I'm with you brother, I expect truck engines to last forever and do the job they are needed to do.
They can look at the data on the computer, compare the injector duration data and the turbo boost data, and can determine how much power the engine was producing. Unless you got a new computer and changed it out before you took it in they can just look at the data. In addition, the pistons are designed with a concave dish design that has a hardened centered to tolerate the heat on the aluminum piston face. Once the engine is disassembled, they look at the flame pattern on the piston head and in most cases when the engine is producing too much power it causes the flame pattern to extend outside of the dish. This is also a dead give away that the truck had a chip. Unfortunately, the 6.0 is a little fragile (IMHO), in the original trim it is only producing something like 200hp, Ford has jacked that up and by chipping it you are jacking it up even higher...
